Johns Hopkins Falls at Second-Seeded Syracuse in NCAA Sweet 16

SYRACUSE, NY – Host and second-seeded Syracuse pulled away with a 9-1 third quarter as the Orange topped Johns Hopkins, 25-8, in the NCAA Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays end the season at 9-9 while the Orange improve to 17-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Orange jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes in, but Hopkins answered with a pair and it was 2-2 with 10:04 to play in the opening quarter. Coming out of a timeout, Bailey Cheetham carried the ball to the goal, drew a slide and then found Ava Angello in the slot for the score to get the Blue Jays on the board. Just over two minutes later, Ashley Mackin buried a free position as Hopkins capitalized on a failed SU clear.

Syracuse responded with a five-goal run to push out to a 7-2 lead early in the second. Jordan Carr halted the run when she scored on a one-timer off the feed from Cheetham at 11:17. The Orange came right back with four goals, bookended around a Cheetham free position goal and it was 11-4 with 2:14 on the clock. Campbell Case got the Jays back on the board when she dodged from behind and scored from a tough angle at 1:21. Just 36 seconds later, Cheetham weaved through the defense and picked the bottom left corner to pull within 11-6. Meaghan Tyrell had the final say of the half however, scoring on a one-timer with just 3.5 seconds to go.

SU came out firing in the third quarter, scoring five straight to push its lead to 17-6 just three minutes in. The Blue Jays got one back when Mackin found Angello on the doorstep at 10:02 in the third. The Orange answered with another extended run and pushed their lead to 24-7 with 6:24 left in the fourth. Mackin got Hopkins back on the board at 4:50 when she scored from in-tight off a Maeve Barker feed. Syracuse would tack on more in the final 10 seconds to account for the 25-8 final.

Cheetham led the Blue Jays with four goals on two goals and two assists. Angello (2g) and Mackin (2g, 1a) also had multi-point games for Hopkins. Angello also tied her career-high with six draw controls. Madison McPherson had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers on the defensive end.

Meaghan Tyrell led Syracuse with nine points (6g, 3a) while Emma Tyrell added eight (7g, 1a). In all, 10 players had at least one point for the Orange. Olivia Adamson had a game-high 12 draw controls and Delaney Sweitzer made 11 saves in the cage.

Notes: Angello is just the third freshman in program history to eclipse 50 points as she finished the season with 53 points (40g, 13a) • She is the first freshman to lead the team in goals and points since 2009.
