#1 Blue Jays Cap Off 36-3 Regular Season With 2-0 Sweep of Franklin & Marshall

Team Heads Into Conference Tournament on 13 Game Win Streak

LANCASTER, PA- Having already clinched the number one seed in the conference tournament, the first-ranked Johns Hopkins Baseball team looked to finish their season strong in a two game doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall.

GAME ONE

  • Score: #1 Johns Hopkins- 4, F&M- 2
  • Records: JHU (36-3, 17-1), F&M (25-14, 12-5)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Matt Savedoff (6-0), L: Greg Nieskens (4-6)
  • The Short Story: Johns Hopkins used six pitchers to hold the Diplomats to just four hits in the nine innings and mustered up just enough offense to take game one 4-2.

How It Happened

  • After getting blanked for the first two innings, the Blue Jays offense sprung to life in the third, kicked off by a Damian Brown base hit to left field. Alex Shane followed up with a single of his own and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with only one out. That brought JHU's RBI leader in Matthew Cooper up to the plate, who cashed in by punching a single threw the left side of the infield to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. Back to back errors by the Diplomats allowed Cooper to cross the plate to make it a three run inning.
  • Bobby Falese came through with a sac fly to left field to scratch across a run for F&M in the bottom of the inning.
  • Johns Hopkins scored its final run of the game in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Shane to score Brown. Shane has been an RBI machine of late as he has 10 in the last four games.
  • The Blue Jays bullpen dominated the middle innings with Ryan Anderson, Matt Savedoff and Nic Jos all tossing a scoreless inning to get into the seventh.
  • F&M pulled back within two in the bottom of the seventh, yet again brining in a run on a sac fly, this time off the bat of Drew Butera.
  • Jaspar Carmichael and Ben Keever both hurled a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for JHU to close out a 4-2 low scoring win over the Diplomats.

GAME TWO

  • Score: #1 Johns Hopkins- 15, F&M- 7
  • Records: JHU (36-3, 17-1), F&M (25-12, 12-6)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Cole Jefferson (3-0), L: Peter Mullen (1-1)
  • The Short Story: Johns Hopkins got back to a familiar formula this season, scoring at will to come away with a win. The Blue Jays brought in 15 runs to complete a 36-3 regular season and put an exclamation point on the conference schedule.

How It Happened

  • All 15 of the Blue Jays runs came in the first four innings of the game, with 12 of those coming in the third inning.
  • Jimmy Nunez kicked off the assault in the top of the third inning with an RBI knock to center field to bring in Jake Siani. JHU's next 5 runs came from a combination of walks and hit by pitches to open up a 7-3 lead. Caleb Cyr then stepped up and cleared the bases with a double to left field. Nunez drove in another run on a base hit and Tripp Myers put the final touch on the inning, smoking a two-run homer to right field to give the Jays a comfortable 10 run lead.
  • Cyr ripped a triple to right center field in his next at-bat to continue to pour in the RBI's. Nunez came through with another RBI base hit of his own to follow it up to put Johns Hopkins at 15.
  • F&M had some offense sprinkled throughout the game but it was no where near enough to keep up with the Blue Jays onslaught. JHU once again used a bunch of pitchers, seven in total, to help close out their 36th win of the season and head into the conference tournament on a 13-game win streak.

Inside the Box Score

  • Surprisingly, 12 runs in an inning is not the most for the Blue Jays this season. They scored 14 in their 26-8 win over Dickinson and it is the third time JHU has scored 10+ runs in an inning this season.
  • Jimmy Nunez finished with his first ever three-hit game of his collegiate career and had a career-high 3 RBI in the game two win.
  • With Savedoff earning his sixth win in game one, the Blue Jays are the only team in the country to have multiple starters with at least six wins without recording a single loss.

Of Note

  • The 36-3 record for the Blue Jays is their best regular season performance since 2010 where they went 36-4.
  • Blue Jays will take on Haverford at home on Thursday in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament. This will be the 16th JHU matches up with the Fords in the conference tournament, with the last time being in a 11-1 win for JHU in the championship game in 2019.
  • JHU swept the season series against Haverford by scores of 7-2 and 8-6 at Babb Field.
