The Short Story: A seven run outburst in the seventh allowed the top-ranked Blue Jays to take a ten-run lead on the Lyons. Matt Savedoff had one of his best outings of the season to get through eight innings and Johns Hopkins earned a trip to the Division III College World Series with a 12-2 win.
How it Happened
• After a scoreless first inning, Blue Jays grabbed an early 2-0 lead as they pushed two runs across in the top of the second. After Tripp Myers drew a one-out walk and stole second, junior Caleb Cyr ripped a two-run home run to give the Blue Jays the early two-run lead.
• Hopkins doubled the lead in the top of third. After Matthew Cooper drew a one-out walk and Dillon Souvignier followed with a ground rule double to put two runners in scoring position, sophomore Shawn Steuerer laced a two-run double to left center to chase home Cooper and Souvignier and make it 4-0. Wheaton relivered Jackson Wals came on after the Steuerer double and was able to work his way out of a bases-loaded, one out jam.
• The Lyons got one back in the bottom of the third as AJ Guindon singled, moved to second when Mike Maher drew a walk and then raced home on a Nick Croteau RBI-single. Blue Jay starter Matt Savedoff was able to strand Maher and Croteau.
• Cooper added a run-scoring single in the fourth and the Lyons scratched out another on a RBI-double from Maher to account for a 5-2 score through five.
• The Blue Jays blew the game open in the top of the seventh, bringing seven runs across the plate to push the lead out to 10. In the inning, Cooper and Steuerer launched home runs to help spur the attack and Cooper also added a two RBI double down the left field line later in the inning.
• Matt Savedoff and Hyunwoo Roh combined to get the final six outs and finish off a 12-2 super regional victory for Johns Hopkins.
