BALTIMORE, MD – The defending national champion Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got two goals and one assist from two-time All-American
Katie Sullivan to fuel a 3-0 victory over Sewanee in the Blue Jays' 2023 season opener at Homewood Field on Friday. The win is the sixth straight in a season opener for Johns Hopkins, which was playing its first game since topping Case Western, 2-1, in the 2022 NCAA Championship game.
Sullivan gave the Blue Jays the only goal they would need in the 21
st minute as she sent a corner kick low into the box to the near post and Tiger goalie Abby Jones couldn't control it as it bounced inside the near post to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.
The one-goal lead held until the first minute of the second half, when sophomore
Megha Salvi controlled a pass on the side of the box about five yards above the goal line and slipped a cross to the middle that Sullivan one-timed home from eight yards out to double the lead.
Â
Just 13 minutes later it was a Sullivan offering on a corner that closed the scoring as she sent the corner to the middle of the box and freshman
Ava Venuti poked it through a crowd for her first career goal to give the Blue Jays what proved to be their final goal of the game.
Â
The win runs Hopkins' winning streak to 22 games, its unbeaten streak to 26 games (23-0-3) and its regular season unbeaten streak to 35 games (30-0-5).
Â
With the three goals today, Johns Hopkins also extended its streak of scoring at least two goals to 23 games dating back to a 1-1 tie at Messiah early in the 2022 season.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Sunday, when the Blue Jays host Scranton on day two of the JHU Invitational. Sewanee will play Widener in its second game of the tournament.
