Volleyball Cruises Past Susquehanna and Geneseo on Day 2 of Bomber Invitational

Blue Jays Did Not Drop a Set in Three Matches

ITHACA, NY - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team continued its hot stretch of play on Day 2 of the Bomber Invitational Saturday afternoon, sweeping both Susquehanna and SUNY Geneseo 3-0 to go the entire weekend without dropping a set and extend its win streak to five.

Game 1: Johns Hopkins 3, Susquehanna 0

The Blue Jays (7-2) opened Day 2 with a near wire-to-wire, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) win over Susquehanna. Hopkins got contributions across the board on the offensive end — four players tallied at least seven kills in the contest — paced by a game-high 13 from Simone Adam. Grace Reininga led the Jays in digs with 11 — her fourth straight game in double digits — while Alice Yu registered a team-high two blocks and three service aces.

The River Hawks (3-7) held the early lead in Saturday's first set, going ahead 2-0 before Hopkins responded with a pair of their own points to level it. The score remained close at 8-7 in favor of Susquehanna before a 6-1 burst from the Jays that featured kills by Carlsen, Adam and Chidinma Onukwugha put Hopkins up 13-9.

A trio of 2-0 runs by the Jays saw them jump ahead 18-12, with another 5-1 run sparked by kills from Onukwugha and Danielle Norman as well as an ace by Yu ballooned the lead to 23-15. The River Hawks attempted a comeback, getting as close as 24-21, but an attack from Carlsen flew off Susquehanna's block attempt and out to clinch the 25-21 first-set win.

Set 2 was close at the start before a 5-0 run from Hopkins that ended with back-to-back service aces from Evelyn Batista put them up 10-6. The River Hawks narrowly cut into the deficit, but another 8-2 run with points coming via kills by Carlsen and Adam and a pair of Yu-aces saw The Jays extend their lead to 18-10. Susquehanna used a series of runs to cut into the lead once again until it was 24-22 but the effort was too late, as a service error put Hopkins up 2-0 with a 25-22 win.

The Jays scored the first point of the final set on a kill from Carlsen, trading points with the River Hawks until the score read 10-10. Susquehanna slowly began to pull away from there, eventually going up 18-15 before a pair of decisive runs from Hopkins closed out the set and match.

Pamela Chiakpo got things started with her third straight kill and eighth of the contest, with a pair of kills by Carlsen knotting the game at 18. The River Hawks retook the lead at 19-18 but it was short-lived, as another 6-0 run put the Jays up 24-19. The match was ended by Adam, who sent the ball hard to the far corner and in to secure the 25-21 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Game 2: Johns Hopkins 3, Geneseo 0

Hopkins wrapped up its impressive weekend with yet another 3-0 sweep, topping SUNY Geneseo, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 and extending its win streak to five. Adam finished with a game-high 14 kills — the sophomore nearly topped the Knights' team total of 17 — but it was Onukwugha who put together her best performance of the season, tallying 10 kills on just 12 attempts for an incredible .833 hitting percentage. Carlsen and Swaak each posted double-doubles in the win, with Carlsen racking up a game-high 14 digs to go along with her 10 kills while Swaak paired her 13 digs with another 39 assists.

The Jays opened the first set with a 3-1 run, but a 5-0 response quickly vaulted Geneseo (4-7) into the lead. Hopkins responded with kills from Carlsen and Swaak — who had a season-high four on the day — to level the game, before another 6-0 run after the Knights retook the lead put the Jays ahead 12-7. Both sides put together runs with Hopkins eventually going up 17-11 before a 6-2 response from Geneseo made it a two-point game. With the score 20-18, the Jays got kills from Carlsen, Adam and Swaak, before Chiakpo secured her first kill of the set to clinch the 25-20 win.

The second set of Saturday's finale saw Geneseo take an early 6-4 lead before an Adam-kill sparked a 6-1 run to give Hopkins the three-point advantage. The Knights once again had a response, going on a 6-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead, but it was Onukwugha once again proving reliable as an attacker and stopping the run with her eighth kill of the match. Geneseo maintained the lead to 16-12, when a decisive 8-0 run by the Jays all but put the set out of reach.

Carlsen started the stretch, followed by kills from Adam, Yu, an ace from Carlsen and a Swaak-kill to give Hopkins a 20-16 lead. From there the Jays rode points from Swaak and Onukwugha and Adam to take the second set 25-20.

Adam picked up where she left off to start Saturday's final set, getting the first kill to spark a 4-0 opening run. Consecutive kills from Ivy Swafford kept Hopkins ahead 6-3 before the Knights slowly closed the deficit to 9-7. A 4-0 run put the Jays up 13-7 before the sides began to trade blows until the score read 23-20. Just two points away from the win, Hopkins turned to Carlsen and Onukwugha, who each secured their 10th kill of the match to win the final set 25-20 and the game in sweeping fashion.

Next up for the Jays is a mid-week match against Marymount Wednesday, Sept. 20, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
