Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ernie Larossa - Director of Athletic Communications

Mutton, Sixth-Ranked Blue Jays Top Ursinus, 4-1

Blue Jays Improve to 6-1-1 With Road Victory

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team spotted host Ursinus an early goal, but scored the final four goals of the game as the Blue Jays cruised to a 4-1 win at rain-swept Patterson Field Saturday afternoon.  The win runs Hopkins' record to 6-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bears slip to 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Centennial.

After seeing the Bears' Madison Bjorndahl score off a rebound in the ninth minute, the Blue Jays pulled even in the 31st minute when Rylie Mutton scored her first goal of the season off a corner from Katie Sullivan.  Sullivan played her offering towards the middle of the box about eight yards off the goal line and Mutton one-timed it through traffic to tie things up at 1-1.

The game stayed level for just under 21 minutes before Hopkins took the lead for good.  Sophomore Megha Salvi collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and fed a streaking Lily Gaston, who poked one past Ursinus goalie Maddie Nau into an open net from 12 yards out.  Nau came off her line as Salvi's pass threaded the defense, but Gaston got a foot on it to make it 2-1.

Twenty minutes later, the Blue Jays got the insurance goal they wanted and it was Mutton with a highlight reel rip from distance.  After taking a pass nearly 3o yards from the goal and with her back to the goal, Mutton spun to the middle and ripped one just off the crossbar and in from 27 yards out.
Johns Hopkins closed out the scoring eight minutes later when Jessica Camken's cross from the corner found Maria Romo-Nichols on the backside and she touched it into an open net to close out the scoring.

The Blue Jays dominated the stat sheet as they held a 35-5 advantage in shots and took all 14 corner kicks in the game.  Freshman Eva Breiland went the distance in goal and posted a pair of saves for the Blue Jays.  Nau was strong in goal for the Bears as she posted 14 saves, including several sharp ones that kept Ursinus close until the two late goals put the game away.

Johns Hopkins, which extended its Centennial Conference regular season winning streak to 24 games dating back to 2019, will return to action on Wednesday, September 27 when the Blue Jays travel to Randolph-Macon for their next-to-last non-conference game of the season (7 pm).
