Johns Hopkins Loses at George Washington, 16-8

WASHINGTON, DC – Host George Washington used a late 6-1 run to pull away in a 16-8 win over the Johns Hopkins water polo team Friday night in MAWPC action.  
 
Sophomore Jason Mihalopoulos struck first for the Blue Jays, scoring a five-meter goal just 81 seconds in. GW answered with three straight to go up 3-1 midway through the first. Sophomore Gavin Brooke and senior Paul Gensbigler thens cored back-to-back goals just 45 seconds apart to knot the game at three. Mateus Stellet scored with just one second remaining to put the Revolutionaries back on top after one.
 
George Washington outscored Hopkins 4-1 in the second quarter and took an 8-4 lead into the half. Victor Jovanovic and Andrija Sekulic scored consecutive goals to open the third quarter and push the Revolutionaries lead to 10-4. Freshman Alec Baker and junior Ian Raley then sandwiched goals around a strike from Stellet and it was 11-6 after three.
 
GW came out firing in the fourth, scoring the first five goals of the quarter to pull away. Senior Liam Housenbold halted the run when he scored with 22 ticks on the clock to make it 16-8.
 
Raley led the Blue Jays with three points (1g, 2a) to go with two steals. Mihalopoulos had a team-best two goals and two drawn ejections. Sophomore Dado Soares (1g, 1a) and Brooke (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Baker had a team-high three steals to go with his goal. Graduate student Saahil Naik finished with seven saves and two steals.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, October 1 against 18th-ranked Fordham. The MAWPC match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at the Newton White Aquatic Center.
