GETTYSBURG, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team was on the road Wednesday night to face off against a red-hot Gettysburg team, dropping just their second game of the season in a 78-67 loss to the 25
th-ranked Bullets. The Blue Jays trimmed a 13-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter down to just six, but were unable to complete the comeback in their first defeat in nearly three months.
Macie Feldman was exceptional despite the loss, matching her career-highs in both points (20) and rebounds (12) in a game-high 39 minutes to secure her second straight double-double and first ever 20-10 outing. Also eclipsing double digits were
Michaela O'Neil (15) and
Jadyn Murray (11), with the trio combining for just under 70% of Hopkins' point total.
As a team the Blue Jays (18-2, 14-1 Centennial) held the advantage in second-chance points (17-9), and points in the paint (32-20), with Gettysburg (16-3, 13-1 Centennial) narrowly winning the points-off-turnover battle, 15-11. The biggest difference in the game was shooting, with the Bullets shooting 7-14 from 3-point land and 23-29 from the free throw line was Hopkins shot just 3-15 from deep and 8-15 from the stripe.
After Feldman opened the scoring with a jumper to give the Jays their lone lead of the evening, Gettysburg responded by sinking its first five shots — including a pair of triples — to jump out to a commanding 12-4 lead. A made layup by Murray cut the lead to seven before the Bullets closed the quarter on another 8-4 run to take a 22-12 advantage into the break.
Hopkins fell behind by as many as 18 in the second quarter before a personal 5-0 run by
Layla Henderson cut back into the lead once again. A jumper in the final minute from Gettysburg's Alayna Arnolie — who finished with a game-high 22 points — made it a 45-30 game at halftime, marking the first time the Blue Jays trailed at the half since their December 9
th matchup against Dickinson.
Eager to cut into the deficit, Hopkins outscored the Bullets 12-7 — the first six of which came from O'Neil — to start the third and make it a 10-point game, but Gettysburg had the answer once again, building the lead back to 13 heading into the final quarter.
After a made free throw made it a 14-point game at 63-49, the Jays used a 6-0 burst with buckets coming from O'Neil, Murray and Feldman to cut the lead to eight. The sides traded shots before a layup from
Beth Corelli trimmed the lead to six — the closest the score had been since the Bullets led 9-5 — but that was as close as they would get, with a 4-0 run from the Bullets growing the lead back to 10 before Hopkins suffered the 67-78 defeat.
The Blue Jays will look to start a new winning streak Tuesday, Feb. 6 when they host Franklin & Marshall, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
