Etown Pulls Away Late for 36-16 Victory Over Johns Hopkins

Patel, Hoffmann Score Bonus Point Wins for JHU

BALTIMORE, MD – The Elizabethtown wrestling team won the final four bouts of Friday night's match against Johns Hopkins to turn a 16-15 deficit into a 36-16 non-conference victory in Goldfarb Gymnasium.  In the Battle of the Blue Jays, it was Etown's late surge that fueled the victory after the teams had battled virtually evenly through six bouts.

Where the Match Was Won
With Johns Hopkins leading 16-15 after a forfeit win at 157 and a pin at 165, Elizabethtown grabbed the lead for good at 174 as Ganon Smith needed just 57 seconds to record a pin and give EC a 21-16 lead.  Will Davis (184), Traisach Roland (197) and Dylan Waller (285) followed with three consecutive wins by technical fall to lock down the victory.

Patel, Hoffmann Score Bonus-Point Wins for JHU
Johns Hopkins won three bouts on the evening to account for its 16 points.  Sophomore Dhilan Patel got Hopkins on the board at 133 as he scored a 23-9 victory over Etown's Deven Jackson.  Down 6-1 early, Patel cut the deficit to 6-5 at the end of the first period, outscored Jackson 7-1 in the second and added two takedowns and a four-point near fall in the final period to account for the 23-9 final.

After Connor Powell picked up a forfeit win at 157 for Johns Hopkins that trimmed the deficit to 15-10, the Blue Jays grabbed their only lead of the night when Jake Hoffmann made quick work of John Maurer at 165.  Hoffmann appeared well on his way to securing his 10th technical fall of the season as he built an early 9-3 lead, but he turned his fourth takedown of the first period into a pinning combination and stuck Maurer at the 2:22 mark.  Hoffmann is now just one win shy of 50 for his career.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on January 12-13 when the Blue Jays travel to Hampton, Virginia to participate in the Virginia Duals.
