Windley, Johns Hopkins Pull Away From Dickinson, 75-51

Junior Scores Career-High 26 to Lead Blue Jays

CARLISLE, PA – Junior John Windley scored a career-high 26 points and the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team used a 30-4 run to open the second half to fuel a 75-51 win at Dickinson on Tuesday evening.  The win is the sixth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference with the victory.  The Red Devils slip to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the Centennial with the loss.

Johns Hopkins broke open a close game with a 10-point run to open the second half that turned a 39-36 lead into a 49-36 advantage with under 14 minutes remaining.  Windley jump-started the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key and freshman Brayden Fagbemi added five points to spark the first 10 points of what became a game-turning run.

After Cole Cosby broke the ice for Dickinson at the 13:16 mark of the second half to make it 49-38, the Blue Jays used a 20-2 spurt to extend the lead to 69-40 and put the game away.  In the first 13 minutes of the second half, Johns Hopkins hit 12-of-24 shots from the floor while holding the Red Devils to just 2-of-19 shooting during the same time.  Six different Blue Jays scored during the 20-2 spurt with Carson James scoring seven of his 17 points on the night during this time to lead the way.

The decisive second half was a stark contrast to the first as the Blue Jays carried the 39-36 lead into the break on the strength of the hot shooting of Windley, who hit 8-of-10 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, and scored 20 first-half points.

Early on, it was all Red Devils as Dickinson scored the first seven points of the game and led 11-2 just under three minutes into the game after a pair of Isaiah Edmond free throws.

Windley got the Blue Jays going after Edmond's free throws as he drained the first of his four first-half triples a short time later to spark a 14-2 Johns Hopkins run that gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the game at 16-13.  The run lasted just over seven minutes and saw four different Blue Jays hit a three-pointer, including Fagbemi, whose bomb from the top of the key capped the 14-2 spurt.

Dickinson answered the Blue Jay run with a 10-2 spree of their own to grab a 23-18 lead as the first-half clock dripped under the seven-minute mark.  A Nate Ogbu jumper shortly after the Fagbemi triple started the run for the Devils and he later capped it with a three-pointer of his own.

Johns Hopkins was even at 23 a short time later after five quick points from Windley and he would add 10 of his 20 first-half points in the final six minutes to help the Blue Jays to the three-point halftime lead.

Windley would pick up right where he left off to open the second half as his triple from straight on ignited what would become the 30-4 run that sealed the game for the Blue Jays.

Windley's 26-point effort surpasses his previous career high of 23 points (twice) and marks his eighth career 20-point game.  James was the only other Blue Jay to score in double figures with his 17-point showing; he is now just 57 points shy of 1,000 in his career.

Johns Hopkins hit 12 three-pointers in the game to mark the third straight game the Jays have hit 10 or more from deep.  The Blue Jays held a 39-32 rebounding advantage and held the Red Devils to just 15 second-half points and 18-of-51 (.353) shooting on the night.

Ogbu (15) and Edmond (14) combined for 29 of Dickinson's 51 points and Ogbu added a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Red Devils.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Thursday, January 11 when the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore for a key game against the Garnet.
