th-ranked Bucknell used a 5-1 third quarter to break open a close game as the Bison held off Johns Hopkins, 13-8, Saturday night in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action. The Blue Jays slip to 7-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the Bison improve to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
It was a back-and-forth affair over the game's opening eight minutes and the teams were tied at two headed into the second. Jack Murad and Sean Tunnicliff scored twice in 47-second span early in the second to put Bucknell up 4-2. Freshman
Patrick Rooney then sandwiched a pair of goals around a Tyler Hedblad score and it was 5-4 Bison with 1:38 to go in the half. Tunnicliff pushed the lead to two with a five-meter goal at the 1:12-mark.
Bucknell came out firing in the third as the home team scored the first three goals of the period to push out to a 9-4 lead. Sophomore
Alec Baker halted the run with an even-strength goal at 4:17, but the Bison would score two more to take an 11-5 lead after three.
Freshman
Andrew Lee opened the fourth with a six-on-six score and the deficit was five with 6:10 to play. Murad and Shay Gillearn then sandwiched scores round a goal from Baker and the Bison led 13-7 just two minutes later. Baker added a five-meter goal late, but with just eight ticks on the clock, the Blue Jays could get no closer.
Baker led Hopkins with three goals while Rooney and Lee had two each. Lee and junior
Jason Mihalopoulos each drew five ejections. Mihalopoulos also grabbed two steals and blocked a shot in his first game back from injury. Senior
Kyle Pearson made 12 saves and had three steals in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday with a pair of league matches in Emmitsburg, MD. JHU will take on Mercyhurst at 11:00 am and then host Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 pm.
