The win is the seventh straight for Johns Hopkins, which also runs its unbeaten streak to 12 (9-0-3) and improves to 9-1-3 on the year and 7-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays also locked up a spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament with tonight's win. Swarthmore slips to 7-2-4 overall and 4-1-1 with the loss.
Â
After Swarthmore had three golden chances in the 60
th, 61
st and 65
th minutes, it was graduate student
Carrie McIntire who finally broke the scoreless tie in the 66
th minute for the Blue Jays. After
Olivia Redden's free kick into the box was headed towards the middle by
Maria Romo-Nichols, a Swarthmore defender failed to cleanly clear the ball and sent it right to the foot of McIntire, who quickly fired to the near post and past the outstretched hands of Swarthmore goalie
Lila Travers for what proved to be the game's only goal.
Â
Swarthmore pressed late, but couldn't find the equalizer after generating those several good chances early in the half.
Â
The Blue Jays came out firing early in the game with nine shots in the first 22 minutes, but Travers made three of her four first-half saves during this time to keep the game level.
Â
The Blue Jays had an early dangerous chance in the ninth minute when senior
Katie Sullivan's corner kick drifted towards the back post and junior
Ella Macko just missed poking it home in traffic. Four minutes later, it was junior
Megha Salvi making a run through the defense from midfield, only to have her 14-yard offering handled by Travers. Less than 60 seconds later, senior
Juliana Taxter whistled one past Travers' outstretched hands, but just wide of the far post.
Â
Both teams had chances down the stretch in the first half, but both goalies were on their game and kept things scoreless. Swathmore's
Ava Gizzi got her right foot free in the 27
th minute, but
Tia Harrison went low to turn the offering away. A minute later, it was Sullivan being sprung perfectly by Salvi near the top of the box, but Sullivan couldn't cleanly strike it and Travers handled the chance easily.
Â
Swarthmore's best first-half chance came a short time later when
Sydney Ross tried to chip one home from distance after Harrison came off her line, but Ross's offering drifted just wide.
Â
McIntire nearly gave the Blue Jays a one-goal lead in the 55
th minute as she cleanly turned on a defender near the top of the box and fired one that floated just above the crossbar. Swarthmore followed with those three chances between the 60
th and 65
th minutes, but Harrison was equal to the two on target and one was just wide. Less than two minutes after the last of the three, McIntire picked the corner with the game-winner for the Blue Jays.
Â
Harrison finished with five saves and helped the Blue Jays post their fifth consecutive shutout. Travers notched seven saves and Johns Hopkins held a 23-10 advantage in shots and took all four corner kicks in the game.
Â
Johns Hopkins will close its three-game homestand on Saturday, October 19 when the Blue Jays welcome Franklin & Marshall to Baltimore (7:30). That will be the third game in a tripleheader Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall at Homewood Field that day as the women's soccer game will follow the football (1 pm) and men's soccer (5 pm) games.
