BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins wrapped up a busy weekend with a 15-10 win over Conn College Sunday afternoon in the final game of the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship. The Blue Jays are now 10-15 on the season while the Camels fall to 5-10.
Cormac Stevens gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead, but freshman
Phillip Long answered less than a minute later to spark a four-goal Blue Jay run. Junior
Jason Mihalopoulos capped the run at the 6:11-mark in the second quarter as JHU took a 4-1 lead.
Stevens then scored back-to-back goals for the Camels to pull them within one with 5:03 to play in the quarter. Hopkins answered with another four-goal run, this one spanning just two minutes and 54 seconds, with four different goal scorers. Sophomore
Alec Baker put the punctuation on the run with a six-on-five goal at 1:45 to stake the Blue Jays to an 8-3 lead. Stevens got one back for Conn College, but Baker answered on the other end and JHU led 9-4 at the half.
The Camels scored the first two goals out of the break to cut the deficit to three with 3:11 to go in the third. Long pushed the lead back to four with a man-up goal, but goals from Stevens and Jeffery Harrington made it a 10-8 game at the 1:04-mark. Freshman
Patrick Rooney had the final say of the quarter, as he scored on a five-meter and Hopkins led 11-8 after three.
Jesse Ellis and Thomas McDonough sandwiched goals for the Camels around a Mihalopoulos score and it was 12-10 with 5:54 to play. The Blue Jays closed out the game with a pair of Baker goals and an
Andrew Lee score to take the 15-10 win.
Baker led Hopkins with a career-high five goals, while also notching two drawn ejections and three steals. Long also had a five-point game (3g, 2a) while Mihalopoulos finished with three points (2g, 1a) and three drawn ejections. Sophomore
Chris Poisler made 13 saves, grabbed three steals and handed out an assist.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, October 26 with a pair of MAWPC matches versus Mount St. Mary's and Bucknell.
