HAVERFORD, PA – The 14
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team rallied from an early one-goal deficit with two strikes in a less than 30 seconds midway through the first half and the Blue Jay defense held host Haverford scoreless over the final 88 minutes in a 2-1 JHU victory at Walton Field Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 11-2-3 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference. With the win, the Blue Jays secure a bye in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament. The Fords slip to 10-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Centennial.
Â
The Fords jumped out early as they scored in transition to grab a one-goal lead less than two minutes into the game. Keira Prince ran onto a long ball down the wing and worked way to the top of the box to the left of Blue Jay goalie
Tia Harrison. Prince fired one towards the goal, where a closely-marked Grace Haskell was able to redirect it past Harrison to open the scoring.
Â
After it took just 77 seconds to fall behind, the Blue Jays needed just 28 seconds midway through the opening half to turn the one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. Freshman
Carolyn Johnson's cross was not handled cleanly by Haverford goalie Lily Buyer and graduate student
Carrie McIntire poked the rebound home to pull the Blue Jays even.
Â
After pressuring the Fords into a turnover quickly after the restart following McIntire's goal, it was junior
Natalie Smith springing Johnson on a run near the top of the box and Johnson's perfectly placed left-footed strike picked the far corner to give the Jays a 2-1 lead in the 29
th minute.
Â
From there, neither defense would break as the Blue Jays held the Fords scoreless over the final 88:43 and gave up just four shots after Haskell's early strike. On the other side, Haverford withstood a 12-5 Blue Jay shot advantage and managed to fight off seven Blue Jay corner kicks.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return home and close out Centennial Conference play on Wednesday, October 30 when the Blue Jays welcome McDaniel to Homewood Field (7 pm). The Blue Jays can lock up the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament with a win against the Green Terror.
