BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team hosted McDaniel in its regular season home finale Wednesday night, sweeping the Green Terror (25-18, 25-10, 25-12) to complete an undefeated home slate and secure at least one more match at home in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament. The win is the Blue Jays' 13
th straight dating back to September 27th and keeps their perfect record against Centennial Conference opponents — Hopkins hasn't dropped a single set in a conference match this season — intact.
The Blue Jays had their way with McDaniel all night, hitting .364 compared to -0.053 for the visitors to mark the fourth time this season Hopkins has held its opponent to a sub-zero hitting percentage.
Simone Adam finished with a match-high 10 kills while
Helena Swaak (15) and
Kate Danaher (14) both eclipsed double figures in assists. Defensively it was
Chidinma Onukwugha registering a season-high four blocks followed closely by
Virag Murphy and
Brooklyn Pater at three apiece, with
Roxy Karrer also tying her season-high mark in aces with four.
Karrer struck early with a pair of service aces to help Hopkins go up 4-0 in Wednesday's opening set. The Green Terror settled into its attack, keeping the score close at 7-4 before a service error kickstarted a 6-0 run that was capped off by the first of
Ivy Swafford's five kills in the frame to balloon the Blue Jays' lead to 13-4. McDaniel chipped away at the deficit, getting as close as six on four different occasions, the final being 24-18 before Adam struck for her fifth kill of the stanza to close out Set 1, 25-18.
Set 2 saw Hopkins jump in front 6-1 for the second time before a Green Terror kill was answered by a
Jilienne Widener-Onukwugha block that would ignite an 8-0 run to turn a four-point advantage into a 12-point lead at 14-2. The sides traded points until the score read 22-10, where an Onukwugha finisher sparked a set-closing 3-0 run.
As was the case in the first two sets, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-1 lead in Wednesday's final frame off a trio of Adam kills as well as one apiece from
Elysa Pulliam and
Simrin Carlsen. The lead remained five at 9-4 following a Green Terror kill by Kailey Young before Onukwugha tallied her fourth kill of the night to start a 7-0 burst to shoot the hosts in front 16-4. Errors began to plague McDaniel — the Green Terror hit -.107 in the set — building Hopkins' lead to 14 at 22-8 before attempting one final comeback. A 4-0 run cut the lead to 10, but that is as close as the visitors would get before
Pamela Chiakpo and
Anna Pantano added kills in a set- and match-closing 3-0 run to wrap up festivities in sweeping fashion.
The Blue Jays will now take part in a four-match road trip to conclude the regular season, starting with a non-conference bout against Stevenson Thursday, Oct. 31. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
