Batista Collects 1000th Career Dig in Sweep of Bullets

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team put together a statement performance in its midweek match against Gettysburg Wednesday night, sweeping the Bullets, 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-11) in dominant fashion in front of the home crowd. Along with the victory moving the Blue Jays to 16-2 and 2-0 in Centennial Conference play on the season, Evelyn Batista etched her name in the record books by becoming the 13th player in program history to eclipse 1000 career digs with her 13 in the match.

While Batista stole the show with her milestone on the defensive end, it was Simrin Carlsen showcasing her offensive chops with a season-best 17 kills with a .615 hitting percentage to pace all players. Elsewhere on the court Roxy Karrer registered a match-best four aces while Brooklyn Pater led the way once again in blocks with five. As a team Hopkins hit over .350 (.369) for the third straight match while holding their opponent to a sub-zero hitting percentage (-.12) for the second match running in another wire-to-wire victory.

Wednesday's opening set was the most lopsided of the evening, with the Blue Jays hitting .526 compared to -.208 for the Bullets (15-2, 1-1 Centennial) en route to the 25-9 win. Gettysburg claimed the first point on a service error, but a Pater kill quickly turned the deficit into a 6-1 advantage following Carlsen's first kill of the frame. The Bullets stopped the bleeding with a kill from Gianna Galli, but another 5-0 burst from the hosts ballooned the lead to 11-3 early. With the score 16-8 it was Simone Adam starting what would turn into a set-ending 9-1 run to close things out 25-9.

Gettysburg once again used the service game to take an early 2-0 lead in Set 2, but this time it was answered by a Pater-Pamela Chiakpo block that led to a 4-0 run to put Hopkins up 4-2. The Bullets fought back and held a 13-9 advantage halfway through the stanza before Adam struck again to start a 5-0 burst to make it 14-13 Blue Jays. Gettysburg would retake the lead at 15-14 before Carlsen took over, registering five kills to lead Hopkins on a set-closing 11-2 run to go up 2-0.

Chiakpo kicked off the third set with her fifth kill of the night before a 3-0 Bullets run was answered by five consecutive points from Hopkins to make it 6-3. With the set still close at 7-5 it was Alice Yu starting a 5-0 run that included a trio of Carlsen finishers to more than double up Gettysburg at 12-5. A 4-0 and 5-0 run halfway through the set built the Blue Jays's lead to 21-8 and put the match out of reach, with Hopkins responding to a 3-0 Bullets rain with four straight points — the final two of which were Annika Anderson aces — to close out the set 25-11 and the match in sweeping fashion.

Next up for Hopkins is its first true road match since September 20 when they head to Allentown, PA to take on Muhlenberg Saturday, Oct. 12. First serve of the Centennial Conference bout is set for 1 p.m.
