BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins got a combined three goals and three assists from its seniors as the Blue Jays upset sixth-ranked Dickinson, 4-2, on Friday night in the regular season finale. JHU secures the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament as the Jays improve to 11-3-3 and 7-1-1 in the conference. The Red Devils see their seven-game unbeaten streak snapped as they fall to 13-2-3 and 4-2-3 in the Centennial.
The scoring started early as the Blue Jays got on the board in the 11
th minute.
Aidan Dunphy played a long ball to
Will Sangpachatanaruk near the endline. He flicked the ball over his defender and then crossed it into the box. The ball skipped through to
Scotty Coleman, who took a touch to settle and then poked the ball home.
Less than two minutes later, Dickinson had a chance to draw level when Saul Iwowo was fouled in the box. Nicholas Dwamena took the penalty for the Red Devils and picked the bottom left corner with his shot. However, a diving
Simon Turner got a hand on it to knock it away.
The Blue Jays pushed their lead to two after some great one-touch passing.
Jason Pan flicked a pass from
Logan Falzarano to Sangapachatanaruk, who then one-timed it to
Ian Whamond 20 yards out from goal. Whamond ran onto the ball and fired a low shot that skipped over a diving George in the 30
th minute.
Francis Meyer made it a three-goal game in the 37
th minute as the Blue Jays capitalized on a corner kick.
Javi Ordonez, Jr. played a short corner to Meyer, who took a touch and then rifled a left-footed shot just inside the left post.
The teams then combined for two goals in a 30-second span less than five minutes into the second half. Dickinson got on the board at 4:16 off the foot of Iwowo. Jeremy Sallade crossed the ball into the box, where Ethan Jarden headed it and then Iwowo volleyed it in at the left post. The Blue Jays answered quickly when they drew a free kick 27 yards away from the Dickinson goal. Meyer's free kick rang off the cross bar and
Will Andrus headed it back to Dunphy, who buried it from just five yards out.
Dickinson wasn't going away however as Iwowo got his second of the night in the 73
rd minute to make it a 4-2 game. Sallade sent a long ball into the box, where Westin Fryberger played it back across the mouth of the goal to Iwowo, who touched it past Turner from the doorstep.
Hopkins had a 13-11 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corners. Turner finished with three saves in just over 72 minutes of action.
Loucas Costeas played the remainder of the game without facing a shot on goal. George made one save before giving way to Gavin Marr at halftime. Marr made two saves in the second half.
Hopkins will host a Centennial Conference semifinal on Friday, November 6 at Homewood Field. The time of the game will be announced on Monday.
