Johns Hopkins Wins Six at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Second-ranked Johns Hopkins opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a 6-1 run at the Vassar Invitational. The Blue Jays beat three ranked opponents with their lone loss coming to the Division I ninth-ranked Yale Bulldogs. In addition, junior Spencer Grossman Smisek earned his 200th career win for the Blue Jays.
 
Hopkins opened the day with a 27-0 win over Denison. The Blue Jays got a combined nine wins in the Epee from senior Ethan Kim, freshman Darius Kim and sophomore Ethan Insler. Freshman Neil Pandey, sophomore Leonid Kotov and graduate student Sam Roberts combined for nine Sabre wins. Sophomore Yi Peng Sha and freshman Vir Gogoi and Omar Reyes won three bouts each in the Foil.
 
The Blue Jays then cruised to a 25-2 win over the sixth-ranked Drew Rangers. The Epee squad picked up another 9-0 win thanks to Darius Kim, junior Jorge Gana and sophomore Ayan Bhatnagar. The Sabre squad did the same with Pandey, Kotov and junior Alex Jeffords combining for the shutout. Grossman Smisek led the Foil squad to a 7-2 win as he won each of his three bouts.
 
JHU made it three in a row with a 24-3 win over Long Island University. Darius Kim and Gana won three bouts each to lead the Epee squad to an 8-1 win. Pandey went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to a 7-2 win. And in the Foil, Reyes, Grossman Smisek and freshman Alastair Thompson combined for nine wins.
 
Hopkins ran into a tough Yale squad, dropping an 18-9 decision. Darius Kim led the Epee squad with a pair of wins in 6-3 loss. Roberts and Jeffords won one bout each in a 7-2 loss for the Sabre squad. Grossman Smisek and Reyes each won two in a 5-4 loss for the Foil squad.
 
The Blue Jays rebounded with a 20-7 win over the Cleveland State Vikings. Insler paced the Epee squad to a 5-4 win as he won each of his three bouts. Roberts and Pandey won three each as the Sabre squad won 8-1. Thompson did the same for the Foil squad, which won 7-2.
 
Hopkins then beat host and seventh-ranked Vassar, 21-6. Gana won each of his three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win. Roberts and Jeffords won two each as the Sabre squad grabbed a close 5-4 win. Sha, Thompson and Grossman Smisek combined to lead the Foil squad to a 9-0 win.
 
JHU wrapped up the day with a 15-12 win over Sacred Heart, ranked 13th in Division I. Darius Kim won two of his three bouts in a 5-4 loss for the Epee squad. Pandey went 3-0 and the Sabre squad earned a 7-2 win. Sha also went 3-0 but the Foil squad lost a close one, 5-4.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 17 with the MACFA C Round Robin at Navy.
 
Notes: Grossman Smisek now has 202 career wins in the Foil and is tied for 16th in JHU history • Gana needs just two wins to reach the 200-win mark in the Epee • Gana ranks 10th with 198 career Epee wins.
