BALTIMORE, MD –
Jason Pan scored in the 99
th minute to lift Johns Hopkins to a 1-0 win over Penn State Behrend in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays improve to 13-3-4 overall while the Lions end their season at 10-7-4. The win was the 200
th at Homewood for head coach
Craig Appleby.
Pan dribbled out of a crowded penalty box, turned and with no one on him, struck a low shot that skipped inside the left post from 30 yards out to move the Blue Jays into the second round. Pan had almost won it in the 91
st minute with a shot on the doorstep, but Anthony Scalise was able to knock it out.
In the 74
th minute,
Francis Meyer nearly put the Blue Jays on the board off a corner kick, in a play eerily similar to one he scored against Dickinson in the regular season finale.
Javi Ordonez played a short corner to Meyer and he took a touch before firing a shot towards the back post that eluded Scalise, but Brock Kiefer cleared it off the line.
Hopkins had another golden chance in the 85
th minute when
Scotty Coleman chipped a ball over the defense to
Jack Mendrysa. With his back to the goal, he flicked it on but the shot just grazed off the right post and out. Meyer had another good look with the final seconds of regulation ticking off but his shot just went high.
The Blue Jays finished with a 26-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corners. Sophomore
Simon Turner posted five saves, all in the first half, to earn the shutout. Scalise totaled four saves in the loss for the Lions.
Hopkins advances to the NCAA Second Round for the 13
th consecutive tournament appearance. The Blue Jays are now 13-6-6 in the tournament under Appleby. Today's game was the first-ever meeting between JHU and Penn State Behrend.
Hopkins will take on the winner of Washington & Lee and Otterbein in Sunday's second round game. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
