Box Score ANNAPOLIS, MD – Mount St. Mary's scored with 94 seconds remaining to go ahead and held on for an 11-10 win over Johns Hopkins at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship Saturday. The Blue Jays fall to 11-23 and will take on Mercyhurst in the seventh-place game on Sunday.
Hopkins took an early 2-0 lead on goals from
Owen Bartlett and
Andrew Lee. Mount St. Mary's got on the board when Aaron Tarr scored at the 3:58-mark.
Phillip Long answered just 31 seconds later with a six-on-five goal and the Blue Jays led 3-1 after one.
Kacper Cieplik scored to open the second and pull the Mount back within one.
Jason Mihalopoulos scored 13 seconds later to spark a three-goal run that spanned more than eight minutes. Lee capped the run with a power-play goal at 5:49 in the third to put Hopkins on top 6-2.
Tarr scored a five-meter goal at 3:49 to ignite a 4-0 run for Mount St. Mary's that tied the game at six with 21 ticks on the clock. Long halted the run as he scored with just three seconds to play to put JHU on top 7-6. The Mount opened the third with back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game with 4:49 to play. Lee and Long answered with back-to-back goals and the Blue Jays led 9-8 less than a minute later.
Tarr and Alexandros Bellesis came right back with a pair of goals for MSM to retake the lead at the 2:15-mark. The lead was short-lived however as Lee scored just 22 seconds later to knot the score at 10. Tarr put the Mount back on top with a six-on-five goal at 1:34 and the Blue Jays could not find the equalizer.
Lee led the Blue Jays with four goals while Long added a hat trick.
