ARLINGTON, VA – Host and 20
th-ranked George Washington got six goals from Adonis Vlassis as the Revs earned an 11-7 win over Johns Hopkins Friday night in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action. The Blue Jays fall to 11-20 overall and 3-10 in the MAWPC while GW improves to 15-7 on the season and 11-2 in the conference.
The Revs scored the game's first five goals over a 12-minute span to take the early lead. Sophomore
Owen Bartlett got the Blue Jays on the board at 3:48 in the second to spark a 3-0 JHU run. Freshman
Patrick Rooney then scored a five-meter goal, followed by an even strength tally from classmate
Phillip Long to make it a 5-3 game at the half.
Vlassis scored just 44 seconds into the third to push the lead back to three, but Hopkins answered with scores from juniors
Jason Mihalopoulos and
Quint Steffey to pull within one at the 2:27-mark. Kai De Orbeta scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes to put GW up 8-5 after three. The teams then traded goals throughout the final quarter and the Revs held on for the 11-7 win.
Long led Hopkins with three goals and four points, to go with a pair of blocks. Sophomore
Alec Baker handed out two assists while Mihalopoulos and Bartlett also had two points (1g, 1a) each. Mihalopoulos also reached the 100-point mark for his career with his second point of the night. Senior
Kyle Pearson finished with 11 saves and one steal.
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Saturday at Navy. The MAWPC contest is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start at Lejeune Hall.
