Swarthmore Edges Hopkins, 71-70, on Senior Day

Blue Jays Earn Number Two Seed in Centennial Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD – Vinny DeAngelo went the length of the court and hit what proved to be the game-winning basket with 1.9 seconds remaining as visiting Swarthmore edged Johns Hopkins, 71-70, in Centennial Conference men's basketball action in Goldfarb Gym Saturday afternoon.

With the result, the Blue Jays earn the number two seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament and will host a semifinal game on Friday, February 23 at 6 pm.  Swarthmore will be the number four seed in the tournament and will host Ursinus in the first round of the tournament.

After trailing by 10 at the half and by eight with less than seven minutes to play, the Blue Jays rallied and led by a point on three occasions down the stretch with the final lead (70-69) coming on a John Windley jumper with 10 seconds on the clock.  Swarthmore did not call timeout after the bucket and quickly inbounded to DeAngelo, who drove to the lane and hooked a shot over the outstretched hands of a Blue Jay defender to make it 71-70.

Johns Hopkins would get a great look from Windley off an inbounds play at halfcourt, but his three-pointer from the wing was just short at the buzzer.

After neither team led by more than three in the opening eight minutes of the game, Swarthmore used a 10-2 spurt to create some separation and grab a 19-12 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.  Five different players scored during the run for the Garnet, who were 6-for-6 from the free throw line to fuel the spree.

Johns Hopkins would pull within one at 23-22 by scoring 10 of the next 14 points.  Back-to-back Brian Johansson buckets capped the quick run for the Blue Jays, who were still within five at 29-24 after a pair of Will Sykes free throws with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. A DeAngelo triple and a late layup from Brian Kageyama gave the Garnet a 34-24 lead at the break.

Swarthmore maintained at least a six-point lead for the first six minutes of the second half and the Garnet were up 49-40 with 9:42 on the clock after an Eddie Paquette three-point play before the Blue Jays began their rally.

A Brayden Fagbemi three-pointer ignited a 15-8 spurt for the Blue Jays that would include eight Fagbemi points, including another triple that made it 57-54 with 5:34 remaining.

Fagbemi would eventually pull the Blue Jays even at 60 with a free throw and Hopkins would lead 66-65 and 68-67 in the final 70 seconds before DeAngelo answered Windley's late shot with the game-winner in the final seconds.

DeAngelo scored a game-high 28 points and Michael Caprise added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Garnet, who led for more than 32 minutes in the game.  The Garnet outrebounded the Blue Jays 45-41 and were 19-of-24 from the free throw line.

Windley scored a team-high 20 points and added six rebounds, while Fagbemi added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Jays.
