BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Arcadia scored twice in the first inning, added three more in the second and the Knights never looked back in a 15-6 win over top-ranked Johns Hopkins in the final game of the Baltimore Invitational at Babb Field Sunday afternoon.   The Knights are now 3-1 on the year with wins over the Blue Jays and third-ranked Baldwin Wallace. The Blue Jays slip to 1-2 in with the loss.
Â
Arcadia got a pair of run-scoring singles in the first to grab the early 2-0 lead and then added another RBI-single and a two-run Matt Donchez double to fuel the three-run second inning that chased Blue Jay starter
Quinn Rovner.
Â
The Knights would put the game away in the middle innings as they punched up crooked numbers in the fifth (3), sixth (4) and seventh (3) innings to push out to a 15-0 lead. Justin Massielo was in the middle of the action in all three innings for Arcadia as he singled in a run in the fifth, doubled home two runs in the sixth and capped his day with a run-scoring single in the seventh to help fuel an offense that pounded out 15 hits on the day.
Â
The Blue Jays, who set a national record for home runs last season, used the long ball to account for five of their six runs late in the game. After
Lukas Geer singled in a run in the seventh,
Jack Vahle hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run seventh inning and sophomore
Damian Brown added the second home run of his career – a solo shot – in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.
Â
Donchez, Massielo and Anthony Bruno combined to go 9-for-13 with six runs scored and nine RBIs to lead the way for the Knights. Â Will Conroy went 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and three runs while striking out nine to pick up the win.
Â
The Blue Jays collected eight hits off two Arcadia pitchers, but no Hopkins player had a multi-hit game. Rovner took the loss as he allowed seven hits and five runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, February 28 when the Blue Jays welcome Lebanon Valley to Babb Field (3 pm).
