Johns Hopkins Upsets Ninth-Ranked Temple On The Road

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team upset host and ninth-ranked Temple at the Owls' home invitational Sunday. Hopkins went 1-4 against a slate of five ranked Division I teams.
 
Hopkins dropped a heartbreaker, 14-13, to 12th-ranked Penn in the first round. Sophomore Josephine Chang and freshmen Lauren Prieur and Victoria Li won two bouts each to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Sophomore Bethany Lee earned three wins, including the 100th of her career, in a tough 5-4 loss for the Foil squad. Senior Diya Kulkarni won two bouts as the Epee squad lost 6-3.
 
Hopkins then fell 18-9 to fourth-ranked Princeton. Chang and Li won a bout each in a 7-2 loss for the Sabre squad. Sophomore Rosy Cepero and freshman Julianna Wu each won twice and the Foil squad won 5-4. Sophomore Mickey Zhang won twice in a 7-2 loss for the Epee squad.
 
The Blue Jays lost to the 11th-ranked St. John's Red Storm in round three. Chang and Prieur each won two bouts in a 5-4 win for the Sabre squad. Wu won each of her three bouts to lead the Foil squad to a 5-4 win.
 
JHU then lost 16-11 to sixth-ranked Penn. Chang won twice in a 6-3 loss for the Sabre squad. Wu once again won three times and the Foil squad won 5-4. Mickey Zhang, senior Maya Zhang and freshman Anika Kale won one bout each in a 6-3 loss for the Epee squad.
 
Hopkins closed out the day with a 15-12 win over #9 Temple. Chang won all three of her bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Lee did the same to lead the Foil squad to a 5-4 win. Junior Ameera Ebrahim won twice in a 5-4 loss for the Epee squad.
 
The Blue Jays are back in action on Saturday, March 2 at the NIWFA Championships.
