BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins forced a shot clock violation in the final minute and then ran out the clock for a 10-9 win over Georgetown on a rain-soaked Homewood Field Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 4-2 on the season while the Hoyas fall to 2-3.
Hopkins led 10-6 after an
Abbey Hurlbrink unassisted goal with 12:13 to go in the fourth quarter. Tatum Geist answered with a hockey-style redirect in front at the 7:23-mark. That sparked a three-goal rally as the Hoyas sliced the deficit to just one with 2:23 on the clock. Tessa Brooks won the ensuing draw and Georgetown worked the ball around on offense but were unable to get a shot off and turned the ball over with 42 seconds left. The Blue Jays then ran off the remainder of the clock to take the win.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a two-goal lead with a pair of
Georgie Gorelick goals in a 62-second span. Kylie Hazen scored at the 6:03-mark to ignite a 4-1 run that saw the Hoyas take a 4-3 lead with just one tick left in the first. It was all Hopkins in the second quarter as the Jays outscored the visitors 3-0 to take a 6-4 lead into the half. Senior
Campbell Case scored on the doorstep just 30 seconds in to tie the game. Senior
Marielle McAteer then scored on a left-handed shot off the dodge to put JHU back on top at 10:27. Just 22 seconds later, sophomore
Ava Angello capped the run when she picked the bottom left corner with her right hand.
Georgetown opened the third-quarter scoring with a Gracie Driggs goal in traffic at the 12:39-mark. Angello responded with back-to-back goals just two and a half minutes apart to put Hopkins up 8-5. Brooks scored a free position goal at 5:48 to cut the lead to two. Mackin answered less than 90 seconds later, scoring on a sidearm shot from in-tight. Hurlbrink then scored when she got inside her defender and beat Leah Warehime on the run to stake the Blue Jays to that 10-6 lead.
Angello led the Blue Jays with fourth hat trick of the season and Mackin added three points (1g, 2a). Gorelick was the only other multi-goal scorer for the Blue Jays with her two goals. McAteer, Case and Hurlbrink all had two-point (1g, 1a) outings. Graduate student
