BALTIMORE, MD –Max Hewitt's unassisted goal 44 seconds into overtime was the difference at Homewood Field Friday night as visiting Navy scored a 10-9 win over Johns Hopkins. The win improves the Mids' record to 4-3 on the year, while the Blue Jays slip to 5-3.
Â
Navy's Zach Hayashi won the opening faceoff of the extra period and fed Xavier Arline for a quick shot that whistled wide, but the Midshipmen had the backup. Navy then worked the ball to Hewitt at the top of the box to the left of Blue Jay goalie
Chayse Ierlan and he was able to get inside his defender and score from in tight. The play went to video review and the officials affirmed the game-winning goal moments later.
Â
Twice in the game it didn't look like overtime would be needed – once when Hopkins built an early 6-1 lead and then again when Navy answered with an 8-1 spurt that turned the early five-goal deficit into a 9-7 lead.
Â
Johns Hopkins scored on six of its first 12 shots in the opening 11:55 of the game.Â
Garrett Degnon and
Hunter Chauvette both scored twice during the opening spree for the Blue Jays, who also got strikes from
Dylan Bauer and
Hunter Jaronski before the game was 12 minutes old.
Â
Navy would then hold the Blue Jays scoreless from the 3:05 mark of the first quarter when Degnon scored his second of the game until the 10:24 mark of the third period; during that time the Mids outscored the Blue Jays 5-0 to pull even at 6-6.
Â
An Evan Conway goal at the 2:55 mark of the first-quarter jump-started the five-goal run for Navy, which got two second-quarter goals from Dan Swanson and one from Henry Tolker and then opened the third quarter with a Hayashi tally off the opening faceoff to pull even.
Â
The Blue Jays halted the run on a
Matt Collison goal off a nifty flip pass from
Johnathan Peshko just under five minutes into the third quarter, but Navy ended the period with goals from Arline, Swanson and Tolker in the final eight minutes carry a 9-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
Â
The Blue Jays outshot the Midshipmen 11-5 in the final period, but Navy goalie Dan Daly, who didn't make a save in the third period, made five in the fourth, including back-to-back stops on Degnon offerings early in the period and a doorstep stop on Chauvette midway through the period to maintain the two-goal lead.
Â
Hopkins finally broke through when Degnon picked the far post off a feed from Collison with 6:03 on the fourth-quarter clock and the Blue Jays were even just over three minutes later when
Johnathan Peshko blew home a 10-yarder from the middle of the field off a feed from
Jacob Angelus.
Â
Both teams had chances to win in regulation, but Daly was equal to a Bauer take and Hewitt hit the post with 65 seconds showing. The Blue Jays had a late threat in transition, but missed the point man as the clock wound under five seconds to send the game to overtime. From there, all that remained was Hewitt's game-winner that lifted the Mids to the victory.
