Johns Hopkins Storms Past #9 James Madison, 21-13

BALTIMORE, MD – Five Blue Jays notched at least five points as Johns Hopkins beat ninth-ranked James Madison, 21-13, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 9-3 while the Dukes fall to 8-3.

Tied at three after back-to-back goals from JMU, Ava Angello scored at the 4:06-mark to spark a six-goal run that spanned less than eight minutes. Four different Blue Jays scored during the run, which was bookended with an Angello goal that put Hopkins on top 9-3 with 11:24 to play in the second. Josie Pell and Lauren Savage scored back-to-back goals to halt the run and make it a 9-5 game at 8:40.

Angello answered with back-to-back goals of her own, followed by scores from Campbell Case and Ashley Mackin, in a span of just two minutes and 17 seconds and the Blue Jays led 13-5. Isabella Peterson and Savage scored twice just 53 seconds apart to make it a 13-7 game at the half.

The game of runs continued in the third quarter. Maeve Barker scored off a feed from Abbey Hurlbrink at 8:40. That ignited a run that saw Hopkins score four goals in six minutes to push out to a 17-7 lead with 2:19 to go in the quarter. Olivia Mattis sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Maddie Epke and it was 17-10 just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Angello once again scored consecutive goals, just 48 seconds apart, to push the lead back to nine. The Dukes weren't going away however and got a goal from Katelyn Morgan and a pair from Peterson and it was 19-13 with 7:45 still to play. Barker had the final say as she scored at 5:44 and again at 4:01 to account for the 21-13 final.

Angello led all scorers and tied her career-high with six goals. She also handed out two assists to finish with a career-best eight points. Case (4g, 1a) and Barker (4g, 2a) also tied their career-highs in points and goals. Bailey Cheetham dished a career-best five assists, including one while getting knocked down. Hurlbrink (2g, 3a) and Mackin (3g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Hurlbrink also notched the 100th point of her career.

Jordan Carr led the defense with four caused turnovers and five ground balls, to go with five draws and a goal. Jennifer Barry controlled a game-high 13 draws, the second highest total in school single-game history. Madison Doucette finished with 12 saves, including 11 in the second half, for her seventh double-digit save game of the season.

Peterson and Mattis led the Dukes with three goals each. Morgan (1g, 2a), Epke (2g, 1a) and Maggie Clark (3a) also had three-point outings. Epke had a team-best six draws while Clark added six ground balls. Caitlin Bodden made 14 saves in the cage.
