Sixth-Ranked Michigan Downs Johns Hopkins, 13-9

BALTIMORE, MD – Sixth-ranked Michigan outscored Johns Hopkins, 9-1, in the second half to beat the eight-ranked Blue Jays, 13-9, on Sunday in Big Ten action. The Blue Jays fall to 10-5 overall and 2-3 in the B1G, while the Wolverines improve to 14-1 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.

Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening 12 minutes before a late Michigan goal made it 4-2 after one. Bailey Cheetham struck first, scoring while going to the ground after a failed Wolverine clear at 11:49. Just 32 seconds later, Jane Fetterolf tied the game with an unassisted tally. Abbey Hurlbrink put the Blue Jays back on top when she dodged across the top of the fan and rifled a right-hander to the far post at 10:38. Maeve Barker then curled around the back of the crease, took a pass from Cheetham and scored on the doorstep. Ashley Mackin put JHU up by three at 3:10 when she buried a feed from Marielle McAteer, after she passed up a free position shot.

Jill Smith ended the first-quarter scoring with a shot on the run at the 2:09-mark. Campbell Case opened the second quarter with a quick-stick off a Cheetham helper at 12:02. Just 28 seconds later, Ava Angello scored off a pick-and-roll with Hurlbrink to make it 6-2 Blue Jays. Smith got one back for the Wolverines at the 7:56-mark, to cut the lead in half. Hurlbrink and Case answered with back-to-back advantage goals in a 39-second span to stake Hopkins to an 8-3 lead.

Smith answered again, scoring on a free position shot with 1:01 left in the half to make it 8-4 at the break. That goal sparked a seven-goal Michigan run that spanned more than 18 minutes and saw the Wolverines take a 10-8 lead early in the fourth. Cheetham halted the run with an eight-meter goal at 10:36 to pull the Blue Jays back within one. Michigan closed out the game with three unanswered goals to take the 13-9 win.

Cheetham and Hurlbrink led the Blue Jays with a pair of two-goal, two-assist performances. Case also had a multi-goal game JHU as she finished with two goals. Reagan O'Brien had a game-high four caused turnovers, and Jordan Carr had three takeaways and four ground balls. Carr also controlled four draws and Jennifer Barry had a game-high eight draws. Madison Doucette finished with nine saves and a pair of ground balls. Smith led Michigan with five goals and six points. Fetterolf, Ava Class and Katharine Merrifield each had two-goal games for the Wolverines. Jordyn Harrison had three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Erin O'Grady made eight saves.

Hopkins closes out the regular season on Thursday, April 18 at 24th-ranked Penn State. Opening draw at Panzer Stadium is slated for 5:30 pm.

Notes: Hopkins can secure a home game in the Big Ten quarterfinals with a win at Penn State • Barry now has 101 draw controls on the season and is just the second player in program history to have 100 draws in a season • Barry is two draws shy of tying the program single-season record • Cheetham needs just three points to reach 100 for her career.
