NEW HAVEN, CT – Host and sixth-ranked Yale scored four of the final five goals to beat 11
th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 9-7, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays end their season at 12-8, their most wins since 2015. The Bulldogs improve to 17-2 and advance to Thursday's quarterfinals.
Hopkins led 6-5 after an
Ava Angello goal at 3:20 in the third quarter, capping a three-goal Blue Jay run. Fallon Vaughn answered just 47 seconds later, when she got open in the middle of the arc and scored off a feed from Ashley Kiernan. Jenna Collignon then scored back-to-back goals, bridging the quarter break and Yale led 8-6 with 13:47 to play.
Charlotte Smith pulled Hopkins back within one 26 seconds later, going high-to-low to beat Cami Donadio. Collignon pushed the lead back to two at the 9:45-mark with a free position goal. That turned out to be the last goal of the game.
Smith struck first, scoring midway through the first when she got free cutting down the middle of the arc and buried a pass from
Ashley Mackin. Yale responded with a pair of Sky Carrasquillo goals, followed by a Vaugh strike at 9:28 in the second and the Bulldogs led 3-1.
MK Lescault cut the deficit in half 40 seconds later as she dodged from behind the cage, dropped her stick and scored from in-tight.
Hopkins then got a transition goal to knot the score at three with 3:02 on the clock.
Jordan Carr got things going with a takeaway on defense and after a
Reagan O'Brien clear, Carr was on the receiving end of a Mackin pass for the score. Collignon had the final say of the quarter however, scoring an eight-meter goal with 38 seconds to play to send Yale into the half with a 4-3 lead.
Carrasquillo opened the third-quarter scoring just 44 seconds in, but the Blue Jays answered with three straight to take a 6-5 lead.
Campbell Case answered Carrasquillo's score with a quick-stick on the doorstep at 7:46.
Maeve Barker then tied the game at five, scoring with a pair of defenders draped on her. Angello then capped the run at the 3:20-mark when she scored on a shovel-shot off a pass from
Bailey Cheetham.
Mackin led the Blue Jays with three points on three assists, while Smith (2g) and Cheetham (2a) also had multi-point games. Carr led the defense with five caused turnovers, giving her 52 for the season - two shy of the program single-season record. Carr's five takeaways are also a school post-season record.
Jennifer Barry also broke a school post-season record as she finished with 11 draw controls – four more than Yale had as a team.
Collignon led the Bulldogs with four goals while Carrasquillo also had four points (3g, 1a). Vaugh added a three-point outing (2g, 1a) and Taylor Lane had a pair of assists. Donadio finished with 10 saves in the win.
