BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team wrapped up the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament with a pair of wins over Susquehanna and Marymount Saturday afternoon, topping the River Hawks 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-13) before completing the perfect weekend with another 3-0 sweep of the Saints (25-12, 25-7, 25-10). The Blue Jays extend their win streak to six and move to 8-1 on the season while Susquehanna and Marymount drop to 4-6 and 1-10 respectively.
Game 1: Johns Hopkins 3, Susquehanna 0
The Blue Jays got contributions from across the board in an early afternoon sweep of the River Hawks in which they hit.427 as a team.
Simone Adam led the way in kills for the third straight match with a game-high 12, with
Simrin Carlsen (8) and
Ivy Swafford (6) also impressing on limited attempts. Carlsen racked up a season-best 21 digs to lead Hopkins while Swafford added a career-high three rejections in the comfortable win.
Set 1 was the closest of Saturday's opening match, with the Blue Jays hitting .366 compared to a team-best .114 for Susquehanna in a 25-18 win. The River Hawks held an early 6-4 lead following a Hopkins service error before kills from Carlsen and Yu sparked a 5-1 run to put the Blue Jays in front 9-7. With the score level at nine it was
Pamela Chiakpo and Adam kills paired with a Carlsen ace giving Hopkins a 12-9 lead it would not relinquish.
Hopkins' advantage stayed at three at 19-16 before Widener, Adam and Pater sparked a quick 5-1 run to go up 24-17, with Adam's sixth kill of the stanza closing things out 25-18.
Saturday's second set was all Blue Jays as Adam (five) and Pater (two) combined to score seven of the set's first nine points in favor of Hopkins. The River Hawks finally got on the board to make it 9-1, getting as close as 11-5 before a Carlsen finisher ignited another 6-0 run to balloon Hopkins' lead to 12 and all but put the set out of reach. A Susquehanna kill made it 21-10, but it was Adam,
Helena Swaak and
Ivy Swafford combining to end the set on a 4-0 run and put the Blue Jays up 2-0.
Set 3 was tightly contested to start with Hopkins riding a pair of kills from freshman Anna Pantaro — including the first of her collegiate career — to a 4-2 lead. A 4-0 response put the River Hawks back in charge 6-4 before Pantano,
Virag Murphy and a trio of Carlsen kills gave the Blue Jays their largest lead at 10-7.
Susquehanna leveled things at 11 and again at 12 to stay close, but a solo stuff from Swafford kickstarted a 10-0 run to balloon the lead to 22-12. The River Hawks stopped the bleeding once again with a kill of their own before Murphy and
Chidinma Onukwugha rattled off the next three kills to end the set 25-13 and match 3-0.
Game 2: Johns Hopkins 3, Marymount 0
Hopkins' effort in its opening match could only be outdone by its Match 2 performance in which the Blue Jays cruised to a win while hitting a season-best .508. Adam paced the team in kills once again with eight while Pater finished with a match-high four blocks, but the story of Saturday's finale was told at the service line where freshman
Annika Anderson finished with four of Hopkins' 16 aces.
The Blue Jays' first point came via service error, but the Saints were quick to respond with a kill to level the score back at one. From there, however, a Widener kill ignited a 9-0 run that was capped off by a Pater-Yu rejection to put Hopkins up 10-1. Another 4-0 burst in the middle of the set that came via a kill, block and pair of Chiakpo aces ballooned the lead to 19-7 before Widener tallied her third kill of the set to close things out 25-12.
Set 2 started similarly with Adam racking up the first four kills of the frame to put the Blue Jays up 4-1. The lead stayed at three momentarily before a solo block from Pater turned a four-point lead into a 12-point advantage at 16-4 following another 10-1 spurt. Marymount scored consecutive points for the first time in the set to trim the lead back to 10, but another 9-1 run started by a Swafford ender finished out the second set 25-7.
Saturday's third and final set saw the Saints take their first lead of the match, but the lead was short-lived with a Murphy kill and
Alejandra Sol ace putting Hopkins up 2-1. A kill leveled the score at two before it was the Blue Jays going on a 12-1 run — their biggest of the day — that included four Anderson aces to fly in front 14-3. With the lead still in hand at 19-9, Murphy began what would turn into a set and match-closing 6-1 run capped off by Onukwugha's fifth kill of the frame to settle the score at 25-10 and secure the weekend sweep for Hopkins.
The Blue Jays are back in action Friday, Sept 20 to take on NYU, UC Santa Cruz and MIT at the NYU Tournament. First serve of Hopkins' opener is set for 7 p.m.
