Piraino, Sullivan Each Score Twice To Fuel 4-1 Win at Dickinson

Blue Jays Run Unbeaten Streak to Seven

CARLISLE, PA – Graduate student Olivia Piraino scored the first two goals of her Johns Hopkins career and senior Katie Sullivan scored twice as well as the 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team knocked off host Dickinson, 4-1, in Centennial Conference action at rainy Miller Memorial Field on Wednesday evening.  The win extends the Blue Jays' unbeaten streak to seven games as they improve to 4-1-3 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils slip to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.

Piraino gave the Blue Jays a one-goal in the 12th minute as she collected a loose ball near the edge of the box, turned and fired one off the far post for her first goal of the season.  The Blue Jays would fire 13 first-half shots at Dickinson goalie Sophia Kavulich, but Kavulich made four saves before the break to keep it a one-goal game.

The 1-0 lead held until the 54th minute, when consistent pressure resulted in the second goal of the game.  The Red Devils nearly got the ball back out to midfield after withstanding a pair of Blue Jay shots, but Megha Salvi controlled a loose ball and played it back in to Carrie McIntire, whose pass to the middle eluded a Dickinson defender and found the foot of Piraino.  Piraino wasted no time as she fired from distance into the corner of the goal past a defenseless Kavulich to double the Blue Jay lead.

Just over 10 minutes later, pressure off a corner kick led to the third Blue Jay goal.  Again the Devils failed to clear their defensive third and a cross into the box eventually found the foot of an unmarked Sullivan and she knocked home her third goal of the season to make it 3-0.

The Red Devils answered just 90 seconds later on a great individual play by Maddie Amand.  Amand took on a defender along the edge of the area, spun back to her right foot and picked the far corner to make it 3-1 with more than 25 minutes remaining.

The Blue Jay defense locked down over the final 25 minutes as they allowed just one shot during that time and added Sullivan's second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to account for the final scoring.

Johns Hopkins held a 21-5 advantage in shots and took 10 of the 14 corners in the game.  Kavulich posted seven saves for the Red Devils, while her counterpart, Tia Harrison, was forced to make just two in the victory.

Notes:  Sullivan's two goals give her 46 in her career, which ties her with Sarah Parola (1997-2000) for fourth place on JHU's career goal-scoring list.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 28 when the Blue Jays welcome Ursinus Homewood Field for another Centennial Conference game.  The Blue Jays will honor their seniors and graduate students before Saturday's game.
