Johns Hopkins Falls to Iona To Close Out Weekend

NEW LONDON, CT – Johns Hopkins wrapped up its trip to New England on Sunday afternoon with a 19-12 loss to Iona. The Blue Jays fall to 6-8 on the season, while the Gaels improve to 5-7.

Iona grabbed a 3-0 lead in the game's first four minutes before freshman Patrick Rooney got Hopkins on the board with a six-on-five goal. The Gaels answered with a 4-1 run as they pushed out to a 7-2 lead just 29 seconds into the second quarter. Senior Chris Lo and freshman Phillip Long then sandwiched scores around a Pavle Musikic goal and it was 8-4 with 5:44 to go in the second.

Musikic scored a man-up goal at 3:57 to push the lead to five, but another Rooney score sparked a three-goal Blue Jay run as they cut the lead to two. Rastko Jevdjovic stopped the Hopkins' run with an even strength score late in the quarter, sending Iona into the half with a 10-7 lead.

The Gaels scored four straight to open the third and push their lead to 14-7 midway through the quarter. Long and Rooney scored back-to-back goals in a 36-second span to cut the deficit to five. The Blue Jays could get no closer in the final 11 minutes as Iona outscored JHU, 5-3, during that stretch.

Rooney led the Blue Jays with four goals and five points, along with two drawn ejections. Long (2g, 2a) and junior Daniel Palfi (1g, 3a) add four points each. Long also drew three ejections and grabbed a steal.

Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament in Claremont, CA.
