Hopkins Tops Lynchburg, 4-1, For Second Straight Victory

Blue Jays Have Won Six Straight at Kerr Stadium

ROANOKE, VA – There is something about Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College that brings out the best in the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team.

Two years after winning the program's first national championship with a pair of wins at the 2022 final four, the Blue Jays capped another perfect weekend at Kerr with a 4-1 win over Lynchburg (1-2-1) on the second day of the Roanoke Invitational.  Dating back to 2019, the Blue Jays are 6-0 at Kerr and have outscored those six opponents 17-3.

One day after topping the host Maroons 4-0, the Blue Jays found themselves deadlocked 1-1 with the Hornets at halftime of Sunday afternoon's game.  The first career goal for Johns Hopkins freshman Irene Sanchez-Burgueno, who went top shelf from in tight in the 31st minute, gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.  The Hornets answered six minutes later when Ellen Tampio-Iorns took advantage of a Blue Jay giveaway near the top of the box and scored from 15 yards out.

Despite heavy pressure from the Blue Jays, the 1-1 tie held until the 64th minute, when Johns Hopkins would strike twice in a span of just 31 seconds to break the game open.  Senior Katie Sullivan scored her second goal of the season on a free kick from the wing and classmate Juliana Taxter stuck a penalty kick 31 ticks later to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.
Johns Hopkins (2-1-1) would close out its four-goal day in the 88th minute when junior Megha Salvi's cross was played into the goal by a Lynchburg defender for an own goal.

The Blue Jays, who won their third straight in the series and improve to 5-1-1 all-time against the Hornets, dominated the stat sheet as they held a 23-4 advantage in shots and took six of the 10 corners in the game.

Tia Harrison got the start in goal and posted one save in 45 minutes before Allyson Shick came on in the second half and earned the win; she was not forced to make a save in the second half as the Blue Jay defense allowed just two shots after halftime.

Lynchburg goalie Meredith Bowers posted 10 saves in goal for the Hornets, who hadn't allowed four or more goals since October 30, 2021, when they lost to Christopher Newport, 5-1.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, September 11 when the Blue Jays travel to Salisbury to take on the Seagulls (4 pm).  This will be the first meeting between Johns Hopkins and Salisbury since early in the 2010 season.

Notes:  Sullivan's goal pushed her career point total to 122, which moves her into sole possession of third place on JHU's career points list.
