Johns Hopkins Opens Conference Play with 75-67 Win at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, PA – Five players scored in double figures, led by Brian Johansson's 16 as Johns Hopkins beat host Gettysburg, 75-67, in both teams' Centennial Conference opener Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 6-6 overall while the Bullets fall to 9-4.
 
Gettysburg used a 9-5 spurt early in the second half to turn a three-point deficit into a one-point lead on an Akim Joseph layup at the 15:23-mark. Jeb Williams grabbed the lead back for Hopkins with a three-pointer that sparked an 18-7 run. Williams and Johansson combined for 10 points during the run that spanned just over seven minutes and saw the Blue Jays take a 62-52 lead with 8:20 on the clock.
 
The Bullets responded with a 9-3 run, fueled by six points from Carl Schaller as they trimmed the deficit to four with just 3:22 to play. Wyatt Eglinton Manner and Johansson nailed back-to-back buckets to push the lead back to eight. Jordan Stafford sandwiched four straight points around a Johansson jumper and it was 71-65 Hopkins with 1:05 on the clock. Hopkins then closed out the game by going 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to take the 75-67 win.
 
Hopkins trailed 9-4 early but thanks to a 14-2 run, book-ended by triples from Eglinton Manner and Johansson, to take an 18-11 lead at 12:45. Gettysburg sliced the deficit to three with a 7-3 spurt, powered by four free throws, just over two minutes later. The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Johansson and Charlie Jackson to push out to a 27-18 lead. The teams traded scores over the ensuing three minutes and JHU led 33-24 with 6:24 on the clock.
 
The Bullets then closed the half with a 12-4 run to make it just a one-point game at the break. Tanti Felli opened the second with a bucket in the paint to push the lead to three, but Gettysburg responded with a 9-5 spurt. Joseph did most of the damage, including a layup at 15:23 that put the Bullets up 45-44. It was their first lead since the 15:59-mark in the first half.
 
Johansson led the Blue Jays with 16 points, going 6-of-9 from the field. Jackson scored 15 points and grabbed three steals. Eglinton Manner finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go with three assists. Williams and John Windley had 10 points apiece, while Windley also grabbed seven boards. Joseph and Schaller paced Gettysburg with 17 points each and Joseph also had six rebounds. Stafford added 15 points and Aidan Mess had a team-best eight rebounds.
 
Hopkins returns to the court on Wednesday, January 15 as the Blue Jays visit Washington College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
