GETTYSBURG, PA – The 12
th-ranked (WBCA/D3hoops.com) Gettysburg women's basketball team jumped out to a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never trailed over the final 30 minutes as the Bullets held off #20 (WBCA)/#22 (D3hoops.com) Johns Hopkins, 54-44, in Bream Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Blue Jays, who slip to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bullets bump their record to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial.
Â
The Blue Jays built a four-point lead in the first 75 seconds of the game and were still up 8-5 after a
Michaela O'Neil layup with 5:46 on the first-quarter clock, but Gettysburg answered with an 11-2 run to end period and grab a 16-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes. A three-pointer from
AB Holsinger and four points apiece from
Reagan Chrencik and
Jameson Mott fueled the spurt for the Bullets.
Â
After a
Layla Henderson driving layup for the Blue Jays trimmed a 22-12 deficit to 22-14 with 7:34 remaining in the opening half, the Bullets got five quick points courtesy of an
Alaina Arnolie triple and a short
Shinya Lee jumper that gave Gettysburg a 27-14 advantage. The lead swelled to as many as 15 (33-18) late in the period before the Blue Jays crept within 11 (33-22) at the break on back-to-back baskets from Henderson and
Greta Miller.
Â
The Bullets maintained a three-possession lead for most of the third quarter before pushing out to a 42-28 lead on a Lee hook shot with just under four minutes remaining in the period and Gettysburg carried a 42-31 cushion into the final 10 minutes.
Â
A Mott jumper extended the lead to 15 (46-31) early in the fourth quarter and neither team could get much going over the next four minutes as the Bullets still led 48-34 as the clock dripped to the three-minute mark. O'Neil then helped the Blue Jays cut the 14-point deficit in half as she bookended a 7-0 Blue Jay spurt with a pair of three-pointers, but a Lee jumper halted the spree and the Bullets went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the victory.
Â
Henderson paced the Blue Jays with 11 points, while Miller and O'Neil added 10 points apiece. O'Neil (nine rebounds) and junior
Macie Feldman (nine points, eight rebounds) narrowly missed double-doubles in the setback.
Â
Lee punched up a team-high 11 points and added 13 rebounds and four blocks, while Arnolie (10), Holsinger (10) and Mott (9) helped round out a balanced scoresheet for the Bullets.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Monday, January 13 when the Blue Jays travel to Mary Washington for the first of two consecutive non-conference games.
