BALTIMORE, MD –
Charlie Jackson scored a career-high 25 points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 77-70 win over Franklin & Marshall Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial, while the Diplomats fall to 9-6 and 1-2 in the conference.
Trailing 42-41 with 12:00 minutes to play after a Sebastien Charles layup,
Jeb Williams drained a triple to spark a 16-5 Hopkins' run.
Brian Johansson and Jackson combined for 10 points in the run that spanned nearly five minutes and saw the Blue Jays go up 57-47. Johansson capped the run with a three-pointer with 7:10 to play.
The teams went back and forth over the ensuing three minutes and JHU led by 11 at the 3:57-mark. The Diplomats sliced the deficit to four just 86 seconds later, thanks to a trio of three-pointers from Dylan Cormac and Kevin Nowoswiat. The Blue Jays answered with an 8-2 spurt, led by Jackson, in a span of two minutes and 22 seconds, to push out to a 77-67 lead with nine ticks on the clock. Nowoswiat drained a three-pointer from the wing as time expired to account for the 77-70 final.
Hopkins jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the game's opening six-and-a-half minutes, thanks to a combined nine points from
John Windley and
Wyatt Eglinton Manner. Franklin & Marshall then got a triple from Asad Syed to spark a 16-3 run that saw the Diplomats go 5-of-5 from the field, including 3-of-3 from downtown, to take a 23-20 lead with7:52 on the clock. The teams traded scores over the remainder of the half and Franklin & Marshall took a 30-29 lead into the half.
The teams picked up right where they left off as the Dips outscored the Blue Jays 12-11 over the first seven minutes and held a 42-41 lead. That set the stage for a Hopkins' rally that saw Jackson and Johansson combine for 26 points in the final 12 minutes.
Jackson finished with a career-high 25 points, his second 20-point game of the season. He also grabbed five rebounds and handed out two assists. Johansson added 18 points, five boards and a career-high four steals. Windley also finished in double figures, scoring 12 to go with a game-high eight rebounds. Nowoswiat led the Diplomats with 30 points, going 9-of-13 from the field and 9-of-9 from the line. He also had five assists and five rebounds. John Seidman was the only other player in double figures for the Dips, finishing with 17 points.
Hopkins returns home to take on McDaniel on Wednesday, January 22. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for an 8:00 pm tip.
