Division I Morgan State Tops Johns Hopkins, 37-12

Bears Take First-Ever Meeting Against the Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, MD – Host Morgan State won the first four bouts to jump out to an early lead and the Bears held off visiting Johns Hopkins, 37-12, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools Sunday afternoon.  The match was the first dual meet between two Baltimore area schools since the 1996-97 season.  Division I Morgan State reinstated the sport during the 2023-24 season after a 25-year hiatus; during the period from 1997-2023, Johns Hopkins was the only college or university in the Baltimore area to sponsor a varsity wrestling program.

Where the Match Was Won
The Bears bookended a win by fall at 125 and a technical fall at 149 around a pair of wins by forfeit at 133 and 141 to grab an early 23-0 lead.  The Bears then responded to back-to-back Blue Jay victories at 157 and 165 with wins by technical fall at 174 and another pin at 184 to extend out to a 34-9 lead in what eventually became the 37-12 victory.

Blue Jay Winners
Sophomore Freddy Pimental picked up a win by injury default at 157 to get the Blue Jays on the board and graduate student Chris Roybal added a tough 4-2 win over Kyle Grey at 165 to trim what had been the 23-0 deficit to 23-9.  After the Bears picked up the three straight wins between 174-197, junior Jacob Pomykata closed out the match for the Blue Jays with an 8-2 decision of Rasheen Duncan at 285.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on January 24 when the Blue Jays welcome Ursinus to Goldfarb Gym for the Blue Jays' Centennial Conference opener.
