BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Washington College capitalized on two of its three best scoring chances to turn a 1-0 second-half deficit into a 2-1 lead that the Shorewomen were able to hold onto under heavy pressure from the 23
rd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team at Homewood Field Saturday night. The 2-1 win, the first-ever for Washington College against Johns Hopkins in women's soccer, improves the Shorewomen's record to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays slip to 9-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial.
Â
Johns Hopkins held a 15-1 advantage in shots and took all five corner kicks in the opening half, but the Blue Jays couldn't solve the Shorewomen defense.Â
Olivia Allen made one first-half save with the Blue Jays just off-mark several times.
Â
The scoreless tie held into the 48
th minute before Washington College was called for a handball in the box and the Blue Jays were awarded a penalty kick. Senior
Ella Macko calmly slipped home the PK to stake the Blue Jays to the one-goal lead.
Â
Despite heavy pressure that would include 15 more second-half shots – two of which were turned away by Allen – and eight more corners, the Blue Jays couldn't double their lead and it was the Shorewomen who capitalized.
Â
Playing a ball long through the Blue Jay defense, the Shorewomen were able to draw a foul just outside the box. There, it would be
Bridget Whiteside who threaded a low hard shot through the Blue Jay wall and inside the near post to draw Washington College even in the 60
th minute.
Â
The 1-1 tie held into the 80
th minute when the Shorewomen struck in transition. Again pushing forward quickly with numbers after intercepting a Blue Jay pass, it was
Sophia Kilbride challenging down the wing before slipping a pass to the middle to
Kaileigh Brady who sprung
Lily Barnum in on Blue Jay goalie
Emma Anderson and Barnum scored what proved to be the game-winner from 10 yards out.
Â
The Blue Jays continued to press down the stretch, but Allen made one of her two second-half saves on a
Maria Romo-Nichols offering in the 86
th minute and the Shorewomen were able to keep the Blue Jays away down the stretch.
Â
Johns Hopkins held decided advantages in shots (30-5) and corners (13-1), but it was the two strikes 20 minutes apart for Washington College that proved to be the different.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 18 when the Blue Jays travel to Franklin & Marshall to take on the Diplomats (6 pm).
