Johns Hopkins Cruises Past Conn College and Penn State Behrend

ERIE, PA – Johns Hopkins opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play in impressive fashion Saturday at Penn State Behrend. JHU beat Conn College, 21-10, in the morning and then topped host Penn State Behrend, 26-9. The Blue Jays are now 13-4 on the season and 2-0 in the MPSF.
 
In the morning, Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Conn College in the game's opening three minutes. Owen Bartlett scored two of the game's first three goals to spark that early run. The Camels got on the board with back-to-back goals to make it a 4-2 game with 2:45 to go. Andrew Lee answered with an even-strength at 2:01 to ignite an 8-1 Blue Jay run. Six different players scored during the run that saw Hopkins grab a 12-3 lead with 4:28 to play in the second.
 
Jeffrey Harrington and Artem Kyselov sandwiched goals around a Daniel Palfi score and it was 12-5 late in the quarter. Hopkins answered with a 5-1 run that bridged halftime and its lead ballooned to 17-6. The Camels outscored the Blue Jays, 4-3 over the final nine minutes and Hopkins picked up its first win as members of the MPSF.
 
Lee finished with five goals and six points to lead while Barlett (3g, 1a) and Alex Baker (1g, 3a) had four points each. Max Blecher (2g, 1a) and Brody Mars (1g, 2a) added three points apiece while Baker also had three steals and two blocks. Sebastian Isaacs totaled 17 saves and two assists in his collegiate debut. The 17 saves are the third most by a freshman in program history.
 
Hopkins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead against Penn State Behrend, including a pair of goals from Mason Hofmann. Ryan Carpico got the Lions on the board at 1:44 but the Blue Jays answered with a 12-3 run that spanned just over 10 minutes and saw them go up 17-4. Penn State halted the run with three straight goals to make it a 17-7 game with 2:10 to play in the third. JHU closed out the game on a 9-2 run to secure the 26-19 win.  
 
Matthieu Giauque scored a career-high five goals while Luke Mendelsohn scored four and assisted on fifth. Hofmann also notched five points (3g, 2a) and Ethan Babel tied his career-high with four assists. Iason Mihalopoulos also tallied four points (3g, 1a). Blecher (2g, 1a), Lee (3g) and Quint Steffey (1g, 2a) added three points apiece. Chris Poisler finished with eight saves and one steal in the win.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday against Austin (8:00 am) and Washington & Jefferson (3:30 pm).
 
Notes: Hopkins' 13 wins are the most since 2017, when the Blue Jays won 16 games • JHU is also 2-0 to start conference play for the first time since 2016.
