Johns Hopkins Goes 3-0 at Centennial Quad to Open Season

GETTYSBURG, PA – Johns Hopkins made its debut in the Centennial Conference by winning 13 of 14 events en route to a 3-0 start to the season. Hopkins beat Washington College (208-51), McDaniel (213-38) and host Gettysburg (182-78) on Saturday.
 
Hopkins kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Dylan Jewett, Jonathan Wang, Aden Li and Michael Ivanov combined for a swim of 1:32.31 to win by more than 1.6 seconds. The team of Kai Henrikson-Brandt, Carl Stauffer, Rad Couture and Christian Mayr took third in the relay with a time of 1:35.45.
 
Alessandro Pereira then grabbed a win in his first collegiate swim, beating teammate Jack Cornish to the wall in the 1000 Free. Pereira clocked in at 9:59.40 and Cornish touched in 10:04.65. The Blue Jays went one-two-three in the 200 Free, led by Ken Ning with his first career win (1:44.23). Larry Yu finished just 11 hundredths of a second later for second place, followed by Josiah March in third (1:45.31).
 
Jewett added an individual win as he took the top spot in the 100 Back in 50.36. JHU turned in another one-two-three finish, this time in the 100 Breast. Larkin Helman paced the field with his swim of 58.45, followed by Stauffer (59.07) and Wang (59.34). Li picked up the first of his two individual swims as he swept the Breast events. He won the 200 by more than 3.5 seconds, clocking in at 1:52.32. Couture placed fourth with a time of 1:58.55.
 
Ivanov edged out WC's Nate Rawa by just two hundredths of a second to win the 50 Free. He made it two straight wins in the next event with a swim of 46.80 to take first in the 100 Free. Nicholas Lee finished in fourth place with a swim of 48.15. Bryce Lloyd led JHU with a second-place finish (1:56.67) in the 200 Back, beating Jewett to the wall by just five-hundredths of a second.
 
Helman completed his sweep of the Breast events as he touched the wall in 2:06.33 to win the 200. Julian Maycock followed in 2:09.42 for second place. For the third time, Hopkins swept the top three spots in an event. March led the Blue Jays in the 500 Free with a swim of 4:45.96. Ning took second (4:47.24) and Pereira finished in third (4:49.72).
 
Li grabbed his second individual win with a swim of 50.60 in the 100 Fly. He won the race by nearly 1.4 seconds. Hopkins turned in a fourth sweep of the top three spots.  in the next race, the 200 IM. Yu and Willi Dunlap tied for first, each touching the wall in 1:55.97. Matthew Hartshorn then finished in 1:56.89 for third.
 
Hopkins capped the afternoon with first and second-place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Ivanov, Adam Sandid, Justin Ely and Mayr earned the win in 1:24.00. The team of Li, Wang, Lee and Couture followed in second place with a time of 1:26.33.
 
Hopkins returns to action and makes its debut in the new Barbara & Jerry Procton Pool on Saturday, November 1 against Mount St. Mary's.
