Johns Hopkins Opens Season With Four Dual Meet Wins

GETTYSBURG, PA – Johns Hopkins won nine of 14 events to go 4-0 in its season opener Saturday at the Centennial Conference quint. JHU earned wins over Washington College (215-39), Bryn Mawr (215-41), McDaniel (215-40) and host Gettysburg (150.50-105.50) in its Centennial Conference debut.
 
Hopkins took second and third in the 200 Medley Relay to open the meet. Jaya Veerapaneni, Reese Rosenthal, Ken Lee and Elizabeth Cohen took second in 1:46.39. Stella Zhang, Amy Hu, Kate Petitt and Renee Bak followed in third in 1:49.11. Carly White led the Blue Jays with a second-place finish in the 1000 Free as she touched in 11:13.05.
 
Alex Watson earned the Blue Jays' first conference win as she beat the field in the 200 Free with a swim of 1:55.28. Melissa Er clocked in at 1:56.62 for third, followed by Claire Han in fourth (1:57.27). The Blue Jays then went one-two in the 100 Back, led by Lee, who touched in 57.15. Veerapaneni finished just eight-hundredths of a second later for second place. Hu won her first collegiate individual race as she took the top spot in the 100 Breast in 1:07.82. Katherine Chelus finished in third place with a swim of 1:09.85.
 
Maddie Horner grabbed her first collegiate win as she swam a 2:09.61 to win the 200 Fly. Lily Rossmann took third place with a time of 2:12.82. Kimberly Lan finished in a tie for third in the 50 Free as she clocked in at 24.59. She then won the 100 Free, by eight-hundredths of a second, in 53.40. Cohen took third (53.50), followed by Bak (54.21) and Han (54.22).
 
Lee completed their sweep of the Back events, beating the field in the 200 by more than 3.4 seconds. Lee touched in a winning time of 2:03.30. Zhang finished in 2:08.41 for third place, followed by Rossmann in fourth (2:10.72). Rachel Davis and Horner then went one-two in the 200 Breast. Davis earned the win in 2:28.45 with Horner touching in 2:29.33.
 
The Blue Jays did one better in the next event, the 500 Free, sweeping the top three spots. Er led the way as she finished in 5:15.64 for the win. Watson touched in 5:17.51 for second and Julia Tuinman took third in 5:23.49. Cohen then took second place in the 100 Fly with a swim of 59.15, followed by Petitt in fourth in 59.48.
 
Horner led a trio of Blue Jays in the 200 IM as she took third place in 2:13.26. Davis (2:13.50) edged out Veerapaneni for fourth place by just three-hundredths of a second. Hopkins wrapped up the season opener with a win and third-place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Cohen, Lan, Bak and Anna Miler combined for the win in 1:36.45. Veerapaneni, Rosenthal, Zhang and Han finished in third place in 1:40.11.
 
Hopkins opens its home slate in the new Barbara & Jerry Procton Pool on Saturday, November 1 against Mount St. Mary's.
