BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team continued its winning ways Saturday afternoon, sweeping Mary Washington in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-22), inside Ron Rosner Arena. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 20-3 overall and extend their winning streak to eight matches.
The Blue Jays came out strong in the opening frame, racing to a 10-4 lead behind balanced offensive production from five different hitters —
Alice Yu, Michela De Marzi, Helena Swaak, Jocelyn Pye and
Simone Adam. Hopkins' front-row presence and steady serving kept the pressure on, pushing the margin to 18-10 after a key block from Yu. Mary Washington responded with a 4-0 run to pull within four, but the Blue Jays quickly regained control behind an Adam kill and a Pye service ace. Hopkins capitalized on a pair of Eagle errors to clinch the first set, 25-17.
Hopkins dominated the second set from the service line and at the net. After an early exchange of mini runs, the Blue Jays surged ahead 9-4 thanks to a pair of kills from
Celine Ebert and Adam. Hopkins' offense caught fire midway through the frame, using crisp ball control and efficient side-out play to extend its lead to 20-8. Swaak sealed the set with back-to-back kills, giving Hopkins the commanding 2-0 match advantage, 25-12.
The final set saw the Eagles fight back early, erasing a 4-0 Blue Jay start to take a 13-8 lead. Trailing late, 19-22, Hopkins showed its composure, closing the match on a decisive 6-0 run.
Charlotte Voss delivered a clutch service ace to tie the score at 22-all, and after a Mary Washington attack error, Ebert put down the final kill to secure the sweep, 25-22.
Defensively,
Nicole Tuszynski anchored the back row with six digs, while De Marzi and Yu controlled the net with two blocks apiece. Offensively,
Simone Adam led the way with a team-high seven kills, hitting .313 on the afternoon.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, October 29, when they host Washington College inside Goldfarb Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
