Blue Jays Close With 16-4 Run to Pick Up Road Victory

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team outscored host Rowan 16-4 in the final five minutes to seal a 79-73 road victory Tuesday night in Esby Gymnasium.  The Blue Jays improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Profs slip to 0-4 with the loss.

Johns Hopkins led 63-61 after a Tanti Felli layup with 7:36 remaining, but the Profs answered with an 8-0 run to grab a 69-63 lead as the clock dripped under the five-minute mark.  Khalil Baker fueled the eight-point spurt for Rowan with two layups and a pair of free throws, but the Blue Jays would answer down the stretch.

A Jeb Williams free throw and a Nick Klaiber three-pointer ignited the game-ending run for the Blue Jays, who were even at 69 on another Felli layup with 3:39 to play and Williams answered a pair of Rowan free throws with a triple of his own to give the Blue Jays a one-point lead (72-71) at the 3:06 mark.  It was a lead the Blue Jays would never relinquish.

The Williams three was followed by a fastbreak layup from Wyatt Eglinton Manner a pair from the line from Klaiber that extended the lead to 76-71 with just 31 seconds on the clock.  Rowan would end a three-minute scoreless drought with a Taz Cantey basket nine seconds later, but the Jays would hit three of four from the line down the stretch to seal the victory.

Johns Hopkins led for more than 12 minutes to open the game and built a pair of six-point leads, the last of which came after Evan Rainville's three-pointer with 8:55 showing on the first-half clock made it 24-18.  Rowan answered Rainville's triple with an eight-point run that took less than 90 seconds and was capped by a Baker three-pointer to give the Profs their first lead at 26-24.

Like they would in the second half, the Blue Jays used a late spurt to grab a six-point lead at the break (40-34).  Will Stevenson triggered a 16-8 half-ending run for the Johns Hopkins as he answered Baker's three-pointer with a basket down low and the Jays would added triples from Gil Otoo and a half-ending bucket from Stevenson to fuel their late spurt.

Rowan had the game even at 45 early in the second half and neither team led by more than four again until Rowan's eight-point run gave the Profs the 69-63 lead.  From there, the Blue Jays would use the 16-4 game-ending run to pick up their first road win over the season.

Klaiber and Charlie Jackson paced the Blue Jays with 16 points apiece and Jackson added a career-high 13 rebounds to help the Blue Jays outrebound the Profs 46-33.  Felli and Eglinton Manner both chipped in with 10 points with Eglinton Manner adding eight rebounds and six assists on the night.

Baker led three Profs in double figures with a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds in just 22 minutes.  Brycen Williams (15) and Cantey (12) also scored in double figures for the Profs.

The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, November 22 when they travel to Eastern to take on the Eagles (2 pm).
