STANFORD, CA - The Johns Hopkins water polo team fell to Cal, the fourth-ranked Division I team in the nation, 26-4, in its opening game at the 2025 MPSF Championships at Stanford on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays will take on Penn State Behrend in their next game in the tournament on Saturday at 10 am (PT).
The Golden Bears jumped out to an 8-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 12-2 at the half en route to the victory. Alex Oprea scored five goals and added one assist to lead the way for Cal, which got goals from 14 different players to ease past the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins, which is ranked fourth nationally in Division III, got two goals from MPSF East Newcomer of the Year
Luke Mendelsohn and one goal apiece from
Max Blecher and Matthieu Gianque.
A win on Saturday against the Lions would propel the Blue Jays into Sunday's MPSF East Championship game. Johns Hopkins topped Penn State Behrend, 26-9, when the two teams met earlier this season.
