Balanced Offense, Strong Defense Lift Hopkins Past Susquehanna, 40-10, Into NCAA Semifinals

Blue Jays Outscore River Hawks 33-7 Over Final Three Quarters

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins outscored visiting Susquehanna 33-7 over the final 36 minutes of Saturday's NCAA Quarterfinal game as the Blue Jays punched their ticket to next week's semifinals with a 40-10 victory over the River Hawks at Homewood Field.  The win bumps the Blue Jays' record to 12-1, while Susquehanna had a nine-game winning streak snapped and ends the season at 11-3.

Johns Hopkins will meet the winner of the Wisconsin-River Falls-Wheaton (IL) game next Saturday (December 20) at a time and location to be announced later tonight or on Sunday.

Oddly, it was a 33-7 run that paved the way in Johns Hopkins' 40-22 win at Susquehanna earlier this season.  This time, the 33-7 run capped a 30-point win.

The Blue Jays led just 7-3 as the clock dripped past the middle of the second quarter before a defensive play changed the game.  With Susquehanna facing a third-and-six at its own 30, River Hawk quarterback Josh Ehrlich was chased from the pocket and had open field in front of him before being stripped of the ball from behind by sophomore Graham Hodge.  The Blue Jays recovered and took over at the Susquehanna 11-yard line after a penalty on the return.  Five plays later, quarterback Bay Harvey went in from a yard out to push the lead to 14-3.

The Blue Jay defense then forced a quick three-and-out and the Blue Jays were set up at the River Hawk 48-yard line after a short punt.  It took just three plays to find the end zone as senior Geoff Schroeder found an opening up the middle and sprinted in from 39-yards out to give the Blue Jays a 20-3 lead with 3:06 on the second-quarter clock.

The River Hawks couldn't capitalize on their final possession of the second quarter and the Blue Jay defense turned them over on downs on the first possession of the second half after they had worked to the Johns Hopkins 36-yard line.

Johns Hopkins would turn the stop into another score as Harvey found junior Robby Enright behind the secondary down the middle from 43 yards out to push the lead to 27-3 midway through the third quarter.

Susquehanna answered with it best drive of the game, an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ate just under five minutes off the clock and was capped by a 23-yard touchdown run from sophomore Rahshan La Mons.  La Mons had kept the drive alive with a six-yard reception on third-and-three in Susquehanna territory and converted a fourth-and one just a play before scoring.

The Blue Jays put the game away with back-to-back touchdown drives in the fourth quarter as Harvey shook free from seven yards out early in the quarter to polish off a five-play, 86-yard drive and he later hit Chad Martini with a 24-yard touchdown pass to close the scoring.  Harvey's touchdown run was set up by an electrifying 50-yard completion to Cole Crotty, while a 23-yard Ty Pugliano run fueled the drive that Martini scored on.

Early on, it was Crotty hitting Enright with a 28-yard touchdown pass to cap the Blue Jays' first possession of the game to give Johns Hopkins an early seven-point lead.  Susquehanna answered with an 11-play, 53-yard drive that Dominic Bourgeois finished with his 20th field goal of the season from 35 yards out.

The 7-3 score held until Hodge set up the Blue Jays' next score with his strip-sack of Ehrlich midway through the middle of the second quarter.  That touchdown sprung Johns Hopkins on the 20-0 run that created the separation it needed to secure its third all-time appearance in the NCAA Semifinals (2018, 2024, 2025).
