Hopkins Tops Merchant Marine Academy, Falls to Muhlenberg in CC Duals

Blue Jays Grab First CC Win of the Season

ALLENTOWN, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference duals on Saturday afternoon at Muhlenberg as the Blue Jays topped Merchant Marine (31-12) and fell to the host Mules (29-16).  The split moves the Blue Jays' record to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference.

With the match deadlocked at 6-6 after four weight classes (no match at 125), the Blue Jays grabbed control with three straight wins that netted 16 points.  Freddy Pimental sparked the run with an 11-3 major decision of Edward Pinc at 157, Chris Roybal added a win by injury default at 165 and Connor Powell needed just 2:16 to stick Ivan Corral to give the Jays a 22-6 lead.  After the Mariners got a pin at 184 to trim the deficit to 22-12, the Blue Jays got a John Libby win by injury default at 197 and a Jacob Pomykata 13-9 win over Zachary Fultz to close out the 31-12 victory.
 
Hopkins-Muhlenberg Recap
In a match of runs, it was the Mules who had the first and last ones in the 29-16 win.  After sprinting to a 14-0 lead, the Mules saw the Blue Jays grab a 16-14 lead on the strength of an 89-second Brennan McGrann pin at 149 and back-to-back technical falls from Pimental and Roybal.  From there, the Mules took the lead on an Anson Dewar pin at 174 and added three straight tight wins by decision to seal the victory.
 
What's Next
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Friday, February 7 when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg to take on the Bullets (7 pm).
