BALTIMORE, MD – Head coach
Austin Young earned his 400
th career win on Sunday as Johns Hopkins went 3-1 at its annual home meet. The Blue Jays are now 18-8 on the season.
Hopkins kicked off the day with a 19-8 win over Drew, getting wins in the Sabre (9-0) and Foil (7-2).
Larry Cai,
Leonid Kotov and
Alex Pan combined for all nine wins in the Sabre.
Alan Zheng and
Omar Reyes won twice each to lead the Foil squad to victory. And in the Epee,
Jorge Gana,
Darius Kim and
Ethan Insler won one bout each in a 6-3 loss.
The Blue Jays then beat the Lafayette Leopards, 17-10, and once again got wins in the Sabre (6-3) and Foil (7-2).
Neil Pandey went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad, while Zheng did the same in the Foil. Gana, Insler,
Matthew Dao and
Ayan Bhatnagar each won a bout in a tough 5-4 loss for the Epee squad.
Hopkins then cruised to a 26-1 win over Rutgers to secure Young's 400
th career win. Kotov, Cai and
Sam Roberts won two bouts each to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win.
Alastair Thompson and
Spencer Grossman Smisek combined for six wins as the Foil squad won 9-0. Bhatnagar won each of his three bouts to lead the Epee squad to an 8-1 win.
JHU ended the day with a tough 15-12 loss to Cornell. Zheng and Grossman Smisek each won twice, with Zheng clinching a 5-4 win for the Foil squad. Pan won two bouts in a 5-4 loss by the Sabre squad and in the Epee, Gana, Kim and Dao each won a bout in a 6-3 loss.
Young is now 400-236 in his 22
nd season at Johns Hopkins. He is only the second active coach at Johns Hopkins, in any sport, with at least 400 wins.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, February 9 at UNC's Miller Invitational.
