Mackin, Angello Lift Johns Hopkins Over #12 Penn in Overtime

BALTIMORE, MD – Ashley Mackin capped a four-goal, six-point afternoon with the overtime winner as Johns Hopkins beat 12th-ranked Penn, 15-14, Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 2-2 while the Quakers fall to 1-1.

Mackin scored a free position goal to put Hopkins up 14-12 with 4:41 to play. The Quakers answered with goals from Keeley Block and Anna Brandt in the final two minutes to knot the score at 14. The Blue Jays had a look at the cage for a Mackin buzzer-beater, but Orly Sedransk came up with the stop to force overtime. The Quakers won the draw to open the extra period, but the defense came up with a stop. Mackin came from goal line extended, and with a defender on her back, whipped a behind-the-back shovel shot past Sedransk to win it.

Mackin opened the scoring with a transition goal on the doorstep, off a feed from Reagan O'Brien, at the 7:40-mark. Catherine Berkery tied the game with an eight-meter just 32 seconds later and then an Anna Brandt score gave Penn a 2-1 lead at 1:36. The lead was short-lived as an Ava Angello interception on the ride led to a wide-open Campbell Case with 59 ticks on the clock.

Lacey Downey and Case opened the second quarter with back-to-back rips from eight yards out in a 55-second span to put Hopkins up 4-2. Paige Lipman cashed in on a free position shot at 12:51, but Annie Marshall picked the far post off the dodge just 45 seconds later and it was 5-3. Kate Stanton came right back for the Quakers, scoring on in the slot at 11:38.

The Blue Jays then scored three unanswered in less than five minutes to push out to an 8-4 lead. Case got things going when she scored off an over-the-cage pass from Mackin. MK Lescault then scored an eight-meter, followed by an Angello behind-the-back beauty to cap the run at 5:53.

The teams traded goals over a span of 4:15 and Hopkins led 11-7 with 11:53 to play in the third. Following Angello's third goal of the game at the 11:53-mark, Penn strung together four goals over a 13-minute span to tie the game at 11 early in the fourth. Mackin then book-ended a 3-1 run to stake Hopkins to that 14-12 lead with 4:41 to play.

Mackin paced the Blue Jays with four goals and two assists and Angello had four goals and an assist. Case added a hat trick, her first of the season, and an assist for four points. Lescault had a game-high five ground balls while Paris Colgain had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Laurel Gonzalez controlled a game-high 12 draws, tying her program freshman record. Morgan Giardina finished with seven saves and a pair of ground balls in the cage.

Brandt led all scorers with seven goals, while Block had four assists and five points. Berkery added three points (1g, 2a) and three ground balls. Natasha Gorriaran controlled nine draws and Sedransk made 13 saves to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, February 25 as the Blue Jays kick off a four-game road swing at Georgetown. Opening draw at Cooper Field is slated for 4:00 pm.

Notes: Mackin's overtime winner is her second this season, tying the single-season record for overtime goals • Angello now ranks 13th in JHU history with 105 career goals.
