Strong Second Half Lifts Johns Hopkins to 72-66 Win Over Gettysburg

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins a combined 50 points from Brian Johansson, Charlie Jackson and Wyatt Eglinton Manner as the Blue Jays beat the Gettysburg Bullets, 72-66, Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. JHU improves to 14-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference with its ninth straight win. The Bullets fall to 15-5 overall and 6-2 in the Centennial.

After the teams evenly split the first 28 points of the game, the Bullets pushed out to a seven-point lead on the strength of a lightning-quick 9-2 spurt that took just 97 seconds. A Nate Williams three-pointer at the 12:29 mark jump-started the run for the Bullets, who added triples from Jordan Stafford and RJ Bennett to fuel the spree.

Back-to-back baskets for the Blue Jays, including a three-pointer from Eglinton Manner, trimmed the deficit to 23-20, but the Bullets answered with the next five, including a Stafford layup with 7:13 on the first-half clock, to grab a 28-20 lead.

A late John Windley three-pointer capped a 12-6 spurt for the Blue Jays that drew them within 34-32, but a Lorenzo Carrara layup was the only scoring in the final 90 seconds as the Bullets carried a 36-32 lead into the break.

Hopkins used a 14-8 run coming out of the half to grab a 46-44 lead with 12:49 to play. Jackson scored seven of the Blue Jays' points while Johansson got things going with a three-pointer and then capped it with a shot from the line. Gettysburg responded with a quick 9-5 spurt, while going 4-of-6 from the field, to go up 53-51 at the 8:52-mark. The lead was short-lived as nine unanswered points later saw the Blue Jays take a 60-53 lead, punctuated by a Johansson triple, with 6:03 on the clock.

Gettysburg sliced the deficit to just two at the 2:38-mark, but that's as close as they would get. Hopkins got seven straight points from Johansson and Eglinton Manner and it was 69-60 with 71 ticks on the clock. A pair of Stafford buckets and a Williams layup, sandwiched around two Jackson free throws, made it a five-point game just 34 seconds later. But a Windley free throw sealed it as Gettysburg missed its last two attempts.

Johansson finished with 17 points and five rebounds, while Jackson also scored 17 points and grabbed seven boards. Eglinton Manner added 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Windley chipped in eight points and eight rebounds, to go with two assists. Stafford led all scorers with 25 points and Williams added 16. Akim Joseph finished with nine points and six rebounds.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 8 as the Blue Jays host the Ursinus. Tip-off for the Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
