BALTIMORE, MD – The eight-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team spotted visiting and 10
th-ranked Georgetown an early 2-1 lead, then outscored the Hoyas 7-1 over a 33-minute span in the middle of the game and the Blue Jays went on to an 11-6 win at chilly Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.
Â
The win is the third straight against a top 20 team and the second against a top 10 team in an eight-day span for Johns Hopkins, which is 3-0 for the first time since 2017. The Hoyas slip to 1-1 with the loss.
After Georgetown's
Owen Horning and
Fulton Bayman answered a game-opening half-field goal by
Matt Collison, the Blue Jays methodically pulled away to the 8-3 lead with the 7-1 run.
Â
A
Brooks English strike in an unsettled situation four minutes after Bayman's strike and a
Jimmy Ayers shot-clock-beater with eight second left in the opening period gave the Jays a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.
Â
Despite being outshot by the Hoyas 13-7 in the first quarter and 24-11 in the first half, the Blue Jays led 6-3 at the break as Collison added his second of the game to open the second quarter and
Hunter Chauvette bookended a pair around Bayman's second of the game midway through the quarter. English assisted on both of Chauvette's goals – one in transition with Georgetown pressing out and the other on a slick feed to the slot that Chauvette handled in traffic before sticking under the crossbar.
The margin grew from three to five in a span of less than a minute before the third quarter was seven minutes old. After Georgetown won 9-of-11 first-half faceoffs, the Blue Jays won all five in the third and used the possession advantage to play make-it-take-it to extend the lead. A
Russell Melendez wrap-around goal at the 9:15 mark and an Ayers tally from the doorstep 52 seconds later made it 8-3.
Â
Georgetown's
Kevin Miller would halt the 7-1 run when he scored on a step-down just under two minutes after the Ayers goal, but the Blue Jay defense, which allowed just 10 second-half shots, proceeded to keep the Hoyas off the board until the final three minutes of the game after Miller scored.
Â
Collison capped his hat trick late in the third quarter and Chauvette did the same midway through the fourth before
Chuck Rawson added his fourth goal of the year off a feed from Chauvette with 6:58 on the fourth-quarter clock. Georgetown added two goals in a two-minute span late in the game to account for the final scoring.
Â
Georgetown had one golden chance to get back in the game late in the third quarter when Johns Hopkins drew a two-minute non-releasable penalty while leading 9-4, but the Blue Jay defense killed off the penalty and the Hoyas never got closer than five down the stretch.
Â
Collison (3g, 2a) and Chauvette (3g, 1a) both recorded the hat tricks and matched their career highs for points, while English punched up his second consecutive one-goal, three-assist effort. Callahan finished 9-of-15 at the X with five ground balls and
Luke Staudt, despite facing 34 shots, was forced to make just six saves in goal.
Â
The Hoyas got two goals and one assist from Bayman and one goal and one assist from
Aidan Carroll while
Ross Prince was 11-of-19 on faceoffs.Â
Anderson Moore posted five saves in goal for the Hoyas, who outshot the Blue Jays, 34-25, and won the ground ball battle, 27-19, but were 0-for-4 on extra man and put just 12 of their 34 offerings on cage.
